CSX announces cuts across the system, several locations, mostly BMWE track forces. UP will cut track workers after the merger with NS.

Maybe if the carriers didn't contract out work that sould be done railroad craft workers, more people would be able to vest in railroad retirement and actually retire from the rails. Just saying.

They don't bring home more than me. Retired in 2016 at age 60 with 41.5 years of service. $3400 per month tier 1. $1800 per month tier 2. Wife gets $800 per month tier 2 on top of her social security. We've both been on socialized Medicare for 5 years now. So don't try to tell me how bad Railroad Retirment is. Enjoy your time on the rails.
@k0 I do. I watch these forums to get an idea of how many scabs to hire to replace you railroaders. I can hire one scab to replace five railroad employees. Can pay them less too because they’re not paying into union dues and fired insurance and socialist health insurance plans. So at the end of the day they bring home more money than you and cost me less.
Well then, if it’s such a great deal then quit the railroad and go work for them. Problem solved.
@h0 railroad retirement is overrated. You would be better off taking that $500 a month you pay and putting it in a 401k or IRA. RR retirement is only about $1000 more in retirement on average if you compare a scab job that makes the same about of $$$. Worth the difference to not be tied to one job that you don’t even know will exist in 5 years. At least you can take a 401k with you to a new job or a family can inherit it.

Honestly contractors probably have a better quality of life, better safety records, nicer equipment and comparable compensation.
All they want to do is lay off the railroad workers and then hire contractor/scabs to do the work.
That wont be the only thing they cut. UP has stated in the past that any union member will retain their job, however no where did they say where. Yards will be sold and manpower combined. Some will have a tough choice move or quit.
