Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

How do you live with the uncertainty?

How do you stop thinking about the fact that your job could disappear tomorrow? I know I can't control it, but that doesn't make the worry any easier.

When I first felt that, I started looking for jobs. But not any jobs, only those that excited me. I prepared really well for interviews and by the time the good job opportunities came along, I was ready. So I left not out of fear that Nike might kick me out, but out of excitement that I would be starting a new, even more exciting job. I’ve been out for over a year mow.

All VERY GOOD ADVICE!!!

Its great to see support from us who've been in this position of losing a job. I still remember my first time, what a shock.

The other advice....never have any personal items at work. Or at least nothing that if you never returned to your office it doesn't matter.

Start networking and looking for a new job now. Don’t wait until Nike calls your name. Be proactive. That place is toxic and is not good for your health.

@cs The layoff off rate remains the same the past decade outside of Covid. Nike is just one of the companies currently having issues and mostly self inflicted. Approximately 20M people get laid off every year here in the U.S. EVERY YEAR. Headlines only focus on large corporations.
My spouse and I have been through 8 layoffs in our careers and countless reorgs. My suggestion is to always be prepared for a year of uncertainty. I say a year because some get laid off only after months of finding a new role from a layoff. It’s always happened and always will unfortunately. Keep your resume and skills up to date and consider stretch scopes because those could be new skills that get you your next job! More importantly, live within your means. Layoff rates:
• 2017: ~1.2%
• 2018: ~1.2%
• 2019: ~1.2%
• 2020: ~3.0% (COVID‑19 spike; highest ever recorded)
• 2021: ~1.0%
• 2022: ~1.0%
• 2023: ~1.0%
• 2024: ~1.0%
• 2025: ~1.0%
• 2026 (YTD): ~1.0%

I joined the DSA as non of these issues are local to NKE. I am sick and tired of living in the rotting carcass of this once great nation that cant offer basic safety nets to its own citizens while funding billionares and engaging in endless wars abroad with my taxes.

Emergency funds and just use to dealing with uncertainty. When I first joined I always heard we did layoffs maybe once every 5-7 years. Considering it’s now once every 6 months, you just keep working and focusing on the things you can control.

You must be new here. Been through all the layoffs for the last 20 years, unless you’re in tech then you’ll be fine.

@at I've got over a year in emergency funds, but even still, the thought of getting laid off and burning through all that savings that took years to accumulate is depressing

Have at least six months of expenses in your high-yield savings account. More if you can (the job market is brutal right now). Agree with others to keep your resume updates and regularly apply for other jobs.

Nike is not going to get better at this point. Layoffs will continue over the years until the company is eventually sold.

Highly recommend letting go of needing to work somewhere "cool" and just get a job at a regular company. Local government is not flashy, but can be very secure and offers good health benefits and retirement.

@a4+1m2bdydyn I agree! Make a plan. Get your resume in order. Get the training you need for next steps. Take the best care of your health. Do all the big doctor and dentist things NOW.

I was laid off last year. Felt that sickly uncertainty leading up to it, so I made a plan. And then I was SO RELIEVED when it finally happened!! I didn't realize how extremely unhealthy it was there until I was set free. Trust me, that place is TOXIC.

BUT if you don't find a new role soon, ride it out for the package. Take the gift of some paid time off.

@OP Stop worrying about the things you can't control and focus on the things you can.

Start building your brand, cleaning up your resume and networking. If something does happen you have a strategy vs being reactive.
