I've been here six years and had three managers, each worse than the previous one. Is it mandatory to be an a--hole with barely any knowledge of your job to become a manager here?

My best manager I married. Omg she gave such good head ! I had to. Then we left and now we have our own island together. Cheers LE
I had a great manager in sales
Consulting, but he too was RIF in March. Great mentor, well connected, and respected
Across NA. No idea why he was let go. My new manger and the Sr mgr team (ms) is horrible (and arrogant) and doesn’t care about career development.
I was at Netsuite. For the first 3 years there I had multiple managers. Some good some bad.
Had a fantastic manager for about 7 years. He was all about employee empowerment, giving credit to employees and having them present their work to executives…Essentially everything a great manager should be.
He was laid off on April 1 by email.
Oracle su-ks
I was a manager who spoke up for fellow employees and for customer experience. I was systematically sidelined. I kept contributing till I was let go. (Because) There are very few employers where managers are appreciated above and below in the org structure.
I have been with NetSuite for 10 years and I have some complaints, but I am grateful that i have always had great managers. I am on my 5th one, and knock on wood they are all kind people and empathetic managers.
I had a very good one initially for few years. It was great: he knew tech details; he helped; he covered support shifts for your, when needed; he protected you; he didn't push unnecessary nonsense on you and avoided any extra meetings; he gave high performance review ratings and often tried to help to promote you.
After that I was dry promoted and started reporting directly to his boss, and he is an annoying a--hole.
I was a good manager once. I also worked at Oracle when they promoted two career paths. I gave up being a manager to be an IC-5 with a path to IC-6. I worked at Oracle when an IC-5 could have direct reports, and usually worked for VPs and above. IC-5/6 were respected technical leaders, and it was great. I hated being an Oracle manager because of the fake/false way Oracle wants managers to act and behave. I realized that Oracle had changed when they put me under a new manager and she was an M2. She didn't know what she didn't know, but she bought into being an "manager" and she tried to "manage". Instead of just letting me do my thing, with years and years of experience, she brought all those new "management techniques" and tried them on me. It made my skin crawl as did she. Needless to say, it wasn't long that I was moved out of Oracle. As others have said here, NEVER go to HR about anything. It backfires and never works. You get singled out and even after "investigations" you always lose.
@OP This is now a days very common in crass organizations like O. Arrogant pricks usually get picked from the lot to lead the team. And the worse part is there is no checks and balance in the system. Today I saw one HR email that was talking about how O takes harrassment complaints seriously. Well, try that channel once and will see what happens to you. Been there, done that, and got sc--wed.
I had the best manager. But he was let go on march 31/april 1.
He was empathetic, was a great mentor and was always positive. He was a great and amazing employee and manager. And that’s what cost him is job
Eff oracle
Depends on the person and org. Some are far worse than others. If you can find a good leader with integrity count your blessings. The primary question is will the organization allow him/her to actually fulfill being a good leader or will self preservation and politcs rule the day.
What org?
I had one for years who let me do my job, the one I have now is suffocating and so micromanaging.
