Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Just want to say it’s sunday and i am borderline about to cry because of how anxious I am to long into work tomorrow and face the demands of my job. The stress is overwhelming and the only ppl left here are psychos.

@1jf I concur. I’ve moved to various different roles in this company and some areas really have a culture problem. One team in particular had people who had been in the same role for 12+ years and many worked in the Virginia Beach office before COVID so most knew each other. Eventually the did hire people in from other states. Newcomers were treated with disdain and people didn’t not want yo help you if you had questions. One person in particular would bully people and do whatever they wanted because they were a “expert”. She also constantly interrupted people in meetings and could never accept any other persons suggestion on how to do things. She had to be the star of the show all the time. Eventually I discovered the person was talking out their a-s on several issues but again no one would challenge it. Found the solution to an issue she couldn’t and then she had to keep saying it didn’t work that way when it clearly did. My solution got implemented but this person just talked bad behind my back to anyone who would listen. I got fed up with the culture and had to make a lateral move to a new team because I couldn’t take the hypocrisy anymore. There are so many areas like this at this company.

I quit with nothing lined up and have never had one single regret - not one! The team I worked with were a bunch of backstabbing people who were threatened by my knowledge and relationships with our stakeholders. This company doesn’t care about you…be your own advocate and take care of your mental health.

If you’re not skilled at winning hearts and minds, fear is all you have left to govern with.

@sd It tells me that both the leadership and Human Resources for this corporation has completely lost their moral compass and for some reason think using feat-based tactics to reduce employee headcount is justifiable given whatever financial target metrics they need to meet.

However, such tactics are never acceptable no matter what the financial cost and as a result of continuing this course of action, will eventually make its way to their customer base, the media, and larger world and it will cost them financially more than they know at this time.

Required learning have a scenario about employee having mental health breakdown due to the stress of the job tells a person this is not a good company to work for. If you elect FMLA due to stress they will fire you.
Leadership also said to get used to the fear of RIF every month. What does that tell you?

@ct Agree with this! Particularly the Shawshank Redemption part. Just try to avoid letting your direct leader from “shivving” you on the way out!

You need to remind yourself it is not you, it is them. In most organizations, being ethical and hard working is an asset, at Elevance it is a liability. You will be taken advantage of while the ar-e kissers are rewarded. Think of it like an abusive relationship. You need to have an exit plan but leave when it works for you. Take as many classes or certifications as you can on their dime. Quiet quit as much as you possibly can. While I was still able to be at home (hired fully remote and never went into an office until they randomly decided I had to drive an hour each way before I escaped...) I would have post it notes on my monitor. They don't care about you, don't care about the organization. Or say nothing, no one cares. I know it isn't the same as positive affirmations but you need to remind yourself that you are a functional person in a dysfunctional organization. Watch the Shawshank Redemption and start taking steps to dig your way out of Elevance. Update your resume and have a goal to add skills, apply to jobs and network each week. I would literally make a visual with a tunnel and then give yourself points on progress toward your goal. Obviously can't do it if you are in an office (though that would be hysterical!). Take care of your mental health because you want to interview well but mostly know that there is life on the other side!

Hang in there. Many of us have the Sunday night syndrome too. Take each day at a time and think of it as a paycheck. Meanwhile start looking, no job is perfect but when your Sundays turn into anxiety over Monday, it’s time to start putting that anxiety to use and looking for other opportunities.
