Does anyone know how long you can delay signing the paperwork without impacting your severance payout. If my payout is in 2026 it will be unpleasant from a tax perspective.

@cv I'm guessing you got a BIG chunk of that back in your tax return?

Mine took about a month after my official termination date i.e. the second pay date after separation. Direct deposit/tax withheld

I was part of the July layoffs and was notified on July 29, 2025. I was in 388 NYC and remained on payroll until the beginning of November. I received payment for my unused vacation about two weeks later, around mid-to-late November.

We were asked to sign separation/disclosure paperwork. From what I saw, those who signed received their severance in December, while many who didn’t sign received it in February of the following year. So, not signing delayed the payout.

If delaying the payment into the next tax year could benefit your tax situation, it may be worth considering your options. Just keep in mind that everyone’s circumstances are different, so it’s a good idea to understand the implications before deciding.

Also, be aware that they withheld about 35% in taxes before issuing the severance payment.
