Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ford has become a monument to bureaucracy

The company is so top-heavy that management layers seem to outnumber the people doing actual engineering. Many of the best engineers—the ones who lived and breathed problem-solving—have long since left. What remains is an army of title-holders more interested in PowerPoint presentations, meetings, and career advancement than engineering.

The result is predictable: a growing shortage of genuine technical expertise and an organization that often struggles with problems that competent engineers should be able to solve routinely. Too many of today's so-called engineers couldn't design a simple cardboard box without forming a committee, scheduling a dozen meetings, and asking management for approval.

@j3+1kxyr77bx said it perfectly.

@OP has a point. The way current Ford management operates is to steal ideas and credit from interns and FCGs. One manager would have a contests for solutions to a problem or best new idea, the winner would receive a case of beer. The problem was that the interns and FCGs didn’t have technical depth yet and the manager had an engineering degree from IIT Delhi but zero engineering chops. (how does that happen?) Ergo the continual half baked next best things being sponsored by the manager. Belly flop after belly flop.

But can we really fault the manager who is in over his heads trying to survive and keep his job? It’s really the directors and VPs who should know better. If they don’t care then take the hint.

Alas the days of rewarding innovation and technical skills in Dearborn is long gone. Wear a Ford polo shirt to work, slap a “I work at Ford I drive a Ford” bumper sticker on your F150. Nod your head and applaud the brilliance of your people leader. On paydays cash your attendance check, no need to stress.

@18g I got g-y friends and I don't like this bit you're doing, I suggest revising and doing something else. I think about them when you make these jokes and feel bad.

Anyone want any honest answers from a finance guy? I’ll tell you what’s really going on, nothing to lose!

Here’s a real “efficiency” idea from the corporate finance LL2 - hey we have 150 people in operations working on a forecast that doesn’t make sense and one g-y finance guy that complained he was harassed repeatedly over the last two years that actually does the real forecast - let’s take a dozen IT heads let them work for six months to a year on a mechanical actual based forecast that simply takes an average of the last few years and spits out a number (forget about whatever actions the team intends to make) and just use that, of course the 150 heads can stay, we just won’t use their work! Oh the ancillary tasks he does, yeah we’ll hand that over to a half dozen operations people and call it automated! Because that’s what other companies do!

D-mbshits - I have friends at GE and that’s not how they forecast! You’ve been sold a line of sh-t if it even took any selling.

This is how finance operates now - all friends with the slacker DEI crazed women in marketing that will stop at nothing to when they can’t get a date with the cute g-y guy. What once was a good organization has been replaced with political bullsh-tters and homophobes.

Oh and your finance training is now literally facilitated by white collar criminals, foreign ones that are women, so it’s okay!

@f6 You’re not kidding, I was marked for exit after years go solid and stellar performance reviews, last few years at ford were the worst, ended up essentially getting a double promotion at a supplier. Non toxic, I feel like 10 years just came off my life, never would have expected a sh---y situation would end up doing me such a favor. Still things to work on though, but doing better, not that anyone at ford cared to ask.

Non-management types need to understand that program management and process adherence are what keep a company on track and successful.

in spite of the F150 lightning not selling, it is astounding that they got that vehicle thru all the ford bureaucracy and came out with a high quality truck. lacking range of course. but it really did what it could with the tech of the day. that truck was not an engineering problem, it was a target market problem (product direction letter, type of thing, bad product planning).

Leadership at all levels share this issue, but one real bottleneck is project management. Too many PMs act like they know better than the technical teams they’re meant to coordinate toward a common goal.Even when they’re right about misalignment, they rarely explore why. Instead, they isolate teams and dictate. Autocrats without the “auto,” without the “crat-ense,” but with plenty of rat.

Too many things went wrong, thanks to the stoopidity of the Ford family, particularly Bill. AM was the only good CEO we had in the last 25 years, probably more. What was Bill's decision? Sending him packing a year before the end of his contract. Mark Fields, who was imitating AM (because he realized that AM was a good CEO), was also let go earlier because he didn't embrace the full BEV path.

7-8 years later, the company posted over 40 billions with a B dollars of losses due to BEV, Model E division was reabsorbed into the company, and I have not heard a peep from management about the big sc--w up, not even to say they were wrong. What are we doing now? What Mark Fields was saying a decade ago (hybrids).

Now, if you see that happening at the CEO level, is easy to imagine what went down in the engineering levels of the company, where the employees are not paid millions of dollars annually, nor they have contracts with golden parachutes. The best, the average, and the below average employees were laid off, or they decided to leave. The few remaining are not motivated to work, nor to correct the mistakes that pop up frequently to avoid a confrontation with managers (ask me how I know).

So how the infinite wisdom of our managers and overlords solved this? Hiring ten times the number of engineers in the LCCs, each with 1000 times less experience than the ones being replaced. So what else came from the butts of our dear LLxs, sorry, from their mouths? It is hard to tell the difference with that much sh!t pouring out. Well, they think replacing knowledge with processes is the way to go, so now the new unexperienced hires have too many documents to read, too much to learn, and very few of those documents are updated. What could go wrong, right?

Sell the Ford shares, save money, put your hands in teh air and be ready for the ride...

Ford is now reaping what they've sown, and it's only going to get worse over time.

I wish that I could muster up the energy to care, but as long as 'dem direct deposits keep rolling, 🤷‍♀️
