Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Why does Dell have thousands of Software Engineers?

Honest question: Why does Dell have software Engineering Leaders and 10s of thousands of software developers?

Every piece of enterprise software we develop either doesn't work, has to be recalled, or is already 10 years behind the competition when it releases. So why do we have these groups?

@138 shhh scrum consultants are now implementing cells/pods/WOW.. or just making noise again because they have no clue about either process or engineering.

@133 yes! Or why scrum at scale at all? And since it was a massive failure why didn’t those people who pushed it on us get any consequences?

Everyone is just asleep at the wheel making changes without thinking them through.

this entire post is cr-p, makes no sense. Better question, why we have so many managers and product owners that are responsible for the direction of these cr-p products. They're the ones that should be let go.

It'd be nice if they would implement healthcheck monitors on the core applications so we could actually work on a Monday morning. This non-ITIL clowntown of IT inside Dell deserves some terminations.

@tn oh didn’t realize we were going to get into all the aspects of every engineering role we had. Well, yes there’s firmware. Then you need people to build the applications, because we have hundreds of them that don’t just manage hardware but do backups, recovery, monitoring, network management, etc etc. then quality engineering, then all the engineers that support delivery, then your architects who, well you know…architect stuff. Then you have support engineers.

Do we want to continue? That’s across several hundred products. Are you beginning to get the picture?

@p4 That's called firmware. OP is talking about Enterprise solutions, either in the cloud or on-prem. Do you understand the difference? Apparently not. Are you an engineer?

@eg to build the software products that enable the hardware to function. Honest question. What do you think Dell sells?

iDRAC needs thousands just to keep continually breaking itself every release. It's a great way to maintain job security.

@e0 Dell doesn't know the difference between a software engineer vs a software developer vs an architect vs a programmer vs an application developer vs a doorman. So it doesn't really matter. Dell does not know software at all.

@e0 Um...ya they did..read it again. Honest question: Why does Dell have software Engineering Leaders and 10s of thousands of software developers?

@e0 no there isnt? Developers are just the canadian software engineers

@ac The OP asked about Software Engineers. Not developers. At Dell there is a difference.

@OP It's simple really. Dell opted fir quantity over quality when it railroaded nearly all of the EMC software engineers.

A lot of people have a title that includes “software engineer” in one form or another. A lot of them. But many do little if any actual coding. Many support existing products or off the shelf square-pegs that we try to force into our round holes.

How do people think the hardware works on the several hundred products Dell sells? Are the people at Dell really that d-mb?

@ak Better yet, name one enterprise software product that was organically developed by Dell that works or isn't ten years behind the competition.

@ac I agree with OP. Maybe not tens of thousands after all the recent layoffs but it definitely has been that not long ago. They don't do anything. They can't build anything that works. What good is software development at Dell?

Um, we don't have 10's of thousand of software developers...nice try. Go back to sleep.
