I am asked to relocate to one of the hubs with a forced letter. I asked my management for HQ instead and HR seemed to have okayed it. I never got an updated letter from HR confirming HQ as the new location. Now, I am concerned if HR will pull a surplus on me for not reporting to the right location. Not sure what to do.

Yes they are not paying to relocate. I was able to earn that money through stocks. I was not able to get a job in a metro city. Not sure what prospects I have in Dallas if they lay me off but it’s no good staying back as well, as O feel like I am practically laid off.
If they aren’t paying for your move or giving you an updated letter, you should assume they want you gone and act accordingly. Plenty of people relocated on their own dime just to be laid off weeks to months later.
HR is most definitely not your friend.
Workplace relo is tactic to get rid of you. If you think otherwise, I have a bridge for sale. If you don’t think HR will pull every shady tactic to show you the door (without a severance) you are sadly mistaken… good luck…
Email HR, copy your director. Ask for approval to move to HQ in writing. Have seen other people do it, shouldn’t be a big deal
Did you get this in writing? Your supervisor is going to be the best person to work with their leadership and your HR Business Partner to make sure this is cared for. Do not wait until the last minute.
Surplus has multiple layers of activity and one is your Director (at least, sometimes AD). Those people would be able to take you off the list (if it even got that far).
I bet as long as your webphone location is correct you;re ok.
