Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Nobody consulted our manager

We lost great people in this round and our manager was pi---d. Apparently, he was not consulted on who to lay off. I don't know if it's all an act, but I doubt it. He's a good guy and a good manager, I don't see why he'd lie about something like this. Tells you a lot about how these cuts are decided.

Many great employees gone. Left with the micromanagers who need to justify their job off the back of others. I really don’t understand how they choose who to keep.

@OP our area too. The director and above made decisions on who to cut. Then asked afterwards what these people did and what impact the loss had. Are you kidding me????? Good luck to this company. It is run by complete no nothing leaders.

@e4 Sort of immediate. They’ll be paying several months of severance for all affected, but hey, the jobs are off the books to placate the shareholders. That’s the key…..

@e2 They need that immediate cost cutting measure to free up budget to get double/triple those resources in HIH. Sorry to hear this.

@e1 Agree they will probably use the 9 box for the rounds starting in Feb, but 1/29 was still January. Last week was 100% immediate cost cutting.

@dy this is not true at all as I was laid off, my supervisor was laid off, and her manager was laid off.

@dt This was true during normal layoffs. But the past week was abnormal and industry wide including UPS, Amazon, etc.

@dy Not true. I had high performers on my team laid off.

@dw You're correct. If you were laid off, it's because you were 9-boxed by your supervisor.

@dt Read @bc's comment again. It says that "decisions on who to lay off were made at the band 6+ level." Obviously this wasn't decided at the last minute but it wasn't the band 5 and below managers who were making the decisions. I'm sure there were some exceptions but this has been the case with every band 4 and 5 manager I've talked to so far. This is exactly what happened to me and my team.

So it's very likely that OP's manager had no involvement in the decisions, unless the manager was a band 6.

It’s a total lie to think they don’t know. They didn’t decide this at the last minute; believe me, they knew exactly what was happening. In reality, upper management picks a target—like 1,000 people or 2 percent of the workforce for example—and gives every department a budget. From there, it is your manager who chooses who to let go based on those numbers. They rank everyone from most valuable to least valuable and simply start cutting from the bottom to the top. If a department has ten people and they need to fire four, the manager picks the bottom four on that list; if they need one more, they just move to the next person up. The managers know exactly who they are firing. It isn’t just about the money, either—the closer you are to the sales team, the less likely you are to be laid off. At the end of the day, those are the money makers, and the company will stay vague just to keep everyone working until the last penny is collected to avoid any sabotage.

It’s not an act. The decisions on who to lay off were made at the band 6+ level several weeks ago. The lower level direct managers were rarely involved in the decisions.

On the morning of 1/29 I was told by my band 6 manager that 3 people on my team were being laid off that same day. This was totally news to me and I had ZERO input on which positions/people should be eliminated - even through it’s my direct team and I know the people and the work needs much better. I was pi---d, just like your manager. This is being handled so badly.

I don't think all managers aware. My manager was also laid off but his boss knew in December. I think it just depends on who is consulted on the positions.

@OP from what I’ve heard the managers aren’t being made aware so I’m curious how and who they are choosing to be cut.
