Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell is only as bad as your manager/ORG imo

Do I have gripes about Dell? Absolutely. No company is perfect and no company will ever fulfill ALL of your wants and needs.

I've been here for almost 7 years now and in all honesty, can't say I have any major complaints. My manager is fkn AWESOME. I have more flexibility in my job than I've had anywhere else. I have 5 weeks of PTO, good benefits, and love the $500/year fitness program bc I just buy random cr-p, then get reimbursed and return it all lol.

My orgs exec. leadership is pretty awesome and are as transparent as legal will allow them to be. We aren't required to be in office 5 days/week but rather 30% of each quarter.

I enjoy working with EVERY person on my team along with almost everyone I indirectly work with.

I've gotten about 25 THOUSAND dollars worth of training out of Dell. idk, I guess I'm not seeing why there is so much hate towards dell? Most of it seems to come from the sales org, which I mean... I feel like that's about standard at any large company.

My complaints is that Dell is still acting as if they are in "covid time."

  • Restricted travel and/or going to conferences - unless you have a VP as a title, for the most part!
  • Promotions have been MIA since 2020, at least for those in the US..
  • My raises have never been below 7% for the last 6 years, my last one was only 4%
  • My org NEVER seems to have any budget and my org happens to be one that, while not on the frontline/customer facing, kind of protects the money and information from hackers.. Not my problem though. idgaf as long as I'm getting paid.
  • Dell has ALWAYS been a hybrid company... 3 days in/2 at home. Why the sudden change in policy for 5 days in office after you forced us to go remote for 6 years, forcing us to change our lives around, then telling us that they don't forsee in office work in the future? Only to do a 180 6 months later...
  • Dell has no identity. They follow and do what the BIG companies do - MS, Google, FB, Tesla, etc... rather than do what they think is best for their own employees. Hence the 5 days in office policy.
  • They think AI is going to be their savior but, Dell's AI is literally HORRIBLE. 99% of Dell couldn't give two logs about AI and they keep shoving it down our throat. Which speaking of, Dell is SO far behind in the AI world it's hilarious.
  • I don't think dell gives a single cr-p about the employees (IC's anyways) and it's obvious the Tell Dell results don't matter to them.
  • They pay to have their company listed as a "Top company to work for."

For me, those are my gripes but in all honesty only a few of them affect me as an employee. The rest, idgaf.

@gk I do, and am proud to. Such a shame what the nimrods in Dell leadershit have done to the former EMC company that practically printed money.

Dell Corp maintains a baseline level of SU-K in their culture. It's their business I suppose. If you have decent human beings for Managers or Directors it helps to lessen the blow. I was lucky to have two really good Directors and just one inept one out of Israel that they threw us under before I left. Luckily that one was last and I got to 'retire' on her watch.

I never have a manager stick long enough to form an opinion. Manager turnaround for my team since Covid started has been insane. Feels very unstable as a team.

Dell is a joke of a company at this point. They’ve removed most of the good from it to turn a profit and stuff money in their own pockets. I have no respect for them at all. I take their money, do my job, build my resume and go home.

@gk No, it's a nice polo not a t-shirt. I still have some standards.

I have many questions for you, but I'll start with this one. Do you regularly wear t-shirts that makes people cringe?

Totally disagree. My org management wants to have the people and resources needed to do our jobs. The cutting pressure is from the top.

Nah. You listed more negatives than positives.
Also, you can have all the so-called positives elsewhere and then more.

Dell is a low-budget outfit. Never seen a company go out of it's way to penny pinch recursively.
Your manager is shielding you from most of it but it's just a matter of time.

I generally agree with the OP, but I'll say that recently I'm noticing changes in behavior of my manager, my managers manager, that gives me the impression there is downward pressure being placed on them from higher up (SVP/C-level). Sudden brash decisions and changes in strategic direction from VP level without explanation, etc. Decisions that don't make sense, that even my manager has trouble rationalizing. It's adding stress to our teams, beyond everything you already mentioned and what we all already know from a corporate level. JC has targets he has to hit to make his $100m+ by 2031, so we'll all be feeling the pain for years to come...

I can second what OP is saying. I am fortunate enough to be under one of the few former EMC managers left in my org. He makes working here as pleasant as he possibly can and has absolutely no hesitation when telling us what is real vs what is dell management bs.

@a2 If you read some of yesterday’s posts, MDs advice to managers is to create a crisis to force people to work as if they are under pressure.

I do think dell is behind some of the leaders in AI, but I do think they've done a good job educating and exposing people to AI compared to the bottom 70% in market. That being said, they don't let us do much with that knowledge after the fact

wow, your list of complaints is larger than your list of things you like. I think you answered your own question as to why

I wonder what sales org hates working at Dell more, federal or commercial

If you are a coder of any kind, they have actively been making your life miserable. It’s an intentionally hostile developer experience. You cannot get the simplest resources without pulling strings to VPs. Everything is being intentionally broken to save a few bucks in IT. And every week there is another tool or app being migrated or deprecated.
