Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

RTO Compliance

I honestly don’t see myself ever going back to the office. What happens if I just dont show up—would they actually fire me? Do they even track badge swipes? Is HR planning to enforce this policy ?

Sam signed the ok to RiF people not coming to the office. Expect first week of November for a 12/19 off the books. The hiring freeze has already begun and no new hiring until March 2026 when Frontier will be integrated.

I’m doubtful people are doing their days. Tuesday is busy, but the other days are quite empty.

The push to get people back in the office isn’t really about productivity, it’s about government revenue and real estate. Empty offices mean less payroll tax, less property tax, and less money spent on transit, coffee shops, and downtown businesses. Politicians and landlords have billions tied up in the old model, so they’re trying to force it to survive, even going so far as to mandate rules like requiring employees to be in the office at least 40% of the time just to keep tax incentives.

And the most frustrating part? Most people drive to an office, sit alone, and get on the exact same conference calls they would from home with coworkers in other parts of the country, and sometimes the world! For what? That’s not progress, that’s wasted time.

And the even more frustrating part? Billion dollar companies like ours don’t have the guts to fight back. Instead of saying, “You don’t get to tell us how to run our business, we’ll run it as efficiently as possible with modern tools,” they just go along with it.

This isn’t 1980. Technology is undefeated. Can you imagine if governments tried to force everyone to keep a landline and suppress cell phones just to protect tax revenue? Remote work and AI are the future, governments are just trying to slow down the inevitable.

The world is changing and we seem to always be just slightly behind. I would love for this company to stand up for once and say no...we are leaders, not followers.

@g3 yes I empathize with all parents and caregivers who have family members with disabilities either physical or emotional. After day one in our location with a full office- it was exhausting and I could not get any work done due to the chaos and loud people on calls with no thought of other people around them. Let alone the hour and a half commute. I’m just so disgusted with the company after today. And this is not even full RTO levels…no seats packed in like sardines, loud …

@dr
Ernst and Young will know...if you go in to BR in Jan, you'll see 'em in the cafe. Snappy looking light grey vests with EY on the left shoulder.
ENJOY!

yes, cameras were put in in 2023 in BR before you get into the space pod from the garage.

Who is running the badge reports? I’m a manager but I can’t find anywhere to do that. For those of us who were homeworkers with an AWA and family members with disabilities, RTO is a pain...

@dr yes! The new camera swipe system. In some buildings there are two swipes. Scan to get into thr building and then scan into the floor. People can do math on ghost swipes

There's a camera, too by the swipe reader. It lights up green when I look at it.

Badge reader reports can be run on demand, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly.

Or just do what most people do, show up for a couple hours and leave by lunch

Yes don’t go! But when WFP and Finance tells the teams there needs to be a reduction, who knows what formula are they using? Long term unemployment is high has it was since the pandemic. Seeing people taking the packages now looking for work. Are you willing to give them that box to check if they look at it?

I personally think you shouldn’t ever go and then let us know how it is working out

My thoughts are, your attendance (or lack of) at the office will only matter if your leadership team needs to use it as part of RIF decision making or as a reason to fire you

Sure, they might do anything immediately. Do who knows what factors into RIFs. Nov and Feb are around the corner. Feel free to join the Open for Work LinkedIn groups

@bk lol this is my favorite reply on the history of this site. Yeah don’t go in they won’t do anything, also they will fire you any chance they get... It’s like you changed your mind mid post.

Yeah leadership won’t do a thing about it. All bark, no bite, and they couldn’t care less if people don’t respect them. They don’t view the non executive class as people at all, just numbers they would pounce on to offshore or outsource to line their bonus pockets.

Do not go...do the opposite of what your co tells you.....come back and let us know the results of your experiment.....then if you need to change companies, let us know that as well if you are allowed to do what you want...

I don’t know a single person that’s been fired for refusing to return to office.
