Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Tech Layoff Scope

With yesterday's announcement of the T&D reorg there were a lot of people laid off, but it's hard to know the scope since they don't announce anything anymore. What's everyone hearing? I know of four tech VPs that were let go, and it sounds like a bunch of SDs/ADs/Mgrs as well, and I know of at least a handful of individual contributor from one specific area.

@3nk+1k8xpa3zp Tech very likely as they're still trying to recover from NS's overspending.

It seems NM has become a bloated organization. According to form 5500 on the Department of Labor website, NM added 965 employees in 2022. What the heck are those people working on, if anything.

@OP We're going to cut deep enough that we're going to see some large-scale failures in tech. The field is going to get mad, and we'll see some big money players leave NM. Home Office leaders will panic and try to fix things, they'll overpay to hire and rehire, and we'll be close to where we started financially. But with tech now cut off at the knees, we won't be able to properly support the Field and all of our aging technologies.

Why do we continue to spend millions for bad decisions? Cutting is needed, but why does it always seem that we are cutting the people holding this thing together and never cutting useless figurehead bureaucracy?

My leader said it will be around 8-10 percent of tech depending on the structure you are in. This will be happening in Q1 prior to merit / aip.

I was let go last year so of course I'm a little biased here but it's so sad to see what NM has become. Did NM need some changing, you bet, but that place is an absolute sh!tshow now. How can Jeff P still have a job? He is the sc-m of this earth and only takes care of his Dow Jones friends.

Very insightful observations. It is heartbreaking to see the general atmosphere of concern about the layoffs on the part of good people, with everyone worried about the next wave, after having put in years of good work. The worries are so pervasive, people cannot concentrate on anything else. Per posts here, indeed one should be concerned if one is actually being productive in this wretched hive of sc-m and villainy because that's exactly whom they target. You're not part of the clique of filthy, obstructionist cohorts of lazy, unskilled sh--s, you are being laid off.
Personally I decided I couldn't breathe the putrid air any longer. Left the company on my own terms, no other job offer, nothing. Relinquished the pittance the call pension (had been there less than 3 years), they can keep it and "get rich" of it. Most importantly I relinquished the absurdity of life there. Air is much cleaner after exiting the sewage.

@wc
The plan appears to be twofold:
Get rid of anyone who does decent work
Keep enough yes-men around who can't do anything productive, but can lie convincingly and say how good everything is and keep the illusion going long enough to fit the execs with golden parachutes.
This ship is going down fast, but it may be a few months before it is totally obvious to all.

@vt just wait until you find out there are all sorts of consultants in the business area that think they are product managers/owners who have no idea how the software development lifecycle works.

Its crazy how there are whole departments of “tech” people who don't write code, they just “manage digital products” and shuffle Jira stories apparently

Managers are scheming and plotting to find unpopular individual contributors! Mainly engineers who they don’t seem to fall in line for DEI politics!

Leadership has been very vague with regards to continued restructuring. I did hear mentioned that individual contributor positions wouldn’t be evaluated until after deliverables this year.
