Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is anybody else stuck thinking about layoffs?

Even today? I keep replaying the next round in my head and wondering when it's coming and how large it'll be and whether I'm actually going to make it through. The worry just hangs around because this place has for sure left a mark on everyone who had to live through all of it.

@gy Agree. A company is as strong as its employees. Right now, I’m hearing that morale is extremely low among the survivors. They do not want to go above and beyond at work because they know they can be laid off at any moment. They are collecting paychecks until they find something else

Yes. I've been through layoffs before, over a 25 year career. You think about it if you are a member of the human race, seeing people's livelihoods taken away through no particular fault of their own... You think about it. Just because there's worst things - young soldiers going to war, proverbial "children starving in X country" doesn't mean that you don't feel something when your colleagues or you get laid off. That's not how being a human being works. It doesn't diminish me to have empathy for other people and to accept the surprise and emotion of being reminded harshly that employment is not guaranteed. It's not some immoral feeling to work for a place for years and start to take for granted that the job will be there and the paycheck and the benefits and that maybe, just maybe the people above you are humans and weigh loyalty into the equation and not just short-term shareholders benefit. Let's be clear - being LOYAL and inspiring loyalty from your employees DOES create long-term shareholder benefit. Many on this site talk like shareholder value and good business has no possible overlap with caring about your employees, and that's just wrongheaded thinking. Don't buy it. If Verizon still inspired loyalty, we'd all be in a very different business position right now. It's the erosion of that loyalty that's a driver of why the company is circling the drain.

@OP now imagine you're an 18 yr old soldier wondering if you'll "make it through" the next planned attack in one of our past major wars, knowing that if you do, it for sure will leave "a mark on everyone who had to live through all of it."

I got laid off but definitely dont waste your time worrying. Do your job, dont overwork yourself because even if youre leading it wont matter. Just document everything, keep your resume up to date, and upskill. Use the free tuition assistance. No need to worry about being laid off just be prepared if it happens or start your job search now. Im not saying to bounce but its easier to see whats out there when youre gainfully employed.

By a single day goes by without it crossing my mind. Waiting for my number to be called at this point. It has definitely impacted me mentally. I’m completely checked out but will have a healthy severance when it’s my turn, so I wait…..

@OP or maybe they won't be another round of layoffs! Maybe sh-t will hit the fan because they laid of to many people ! Dont always think negative. I feel bad for the people who lost thier job but that does not mean more!

Unfortunately, the unspoken employment for "life" ended at big American corporations in the early to mid 1980's when AT&T and IBM started mass layoffs that lasted into the 2000's. That was nearly 45 years ago so it's totally unrealistic to think you'll have a guaranteed job by your employer for your entire career.

Corporations are under tremendous market pressure by well funded global competitors. Verizon itself was previously partially owned by Vodafone, a British telecom company, which held a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless. Also, there is tremendous regulations mainly put in place by the DemonCr*ts.

If you want to remain employed you're going to have to develop new skills and remain flexible because things will continue to rapidly change.

@OP if you are smart, you will update your résumé and start submitting your applications. What happened was a bloodbath. I’ve worked at several different large companies for the past 25 years. Sure, sometimes layoffs happen. But I’ve never experienced anything THAT before. I think everyone — those who were laid off in those who survived — are legitimately, traumatized

I’m thinking about it because I got laid off after 20 years of working here - since I graduated college - this is all I have known and I am flat out terrified of the future. My husband got laid off from somewhere else last year and has not found a new job yet either. We have a son and we are without any income very soon. It feels very upsetting to have devoted one’s self to a well loved job just to have my world come crashing down. I’m just grateful for my family and friends rn.
