Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Laying off Canadians while bringing foreigners to replace

Makes sense right? Indians, Malaysians, and mo----------g Americans. Expats and temporary. I bet their visa application indicates “specialized” roles no one in the company can perform. No sh•t, the company laid them off to maximize money laundering and siphoning billing to overseas.

If everyone that worked at IOL wasn't such a bunch of selfish wimps, you could have had a company wide Union and stopped any and all escalation years ago.

@gh of course the execs would have tried; but exxon moved the folks that would have protested (Sherri E, John Wet.) out of IO leadership. Heaven forbid anyone oppose the plans of Exxon… Lord Whelan could have put up a fight… but that is not why he was put into the role. The other execs (outside management committee) have no seat at the decision making table.

@ey Before blaming any government parties, including the conservative Alberta party, have you asked, for the past 20+ years, what have your IOL CANADIAN CL30+ executives done to protect and/or retain any Canada based jobs ? Most of them just happily took any crushy expat jobs, then came back to "optimize" Canada-based workforce, meanwhile collecting and counting IOL and/or XOM RSUs. Corporate Separateness my as.....

No government ever asks IOL to outsource jobs to BTC KLTC, etc. It is your Canadian IOL CL 30+ executives allow this to happen without a fight - even though, I doubt they have any powers, but did they even try ?

Also, what our professional engineering associations doing about this?

One word….. nothing.

But make sure you pay your dues and compete the ethics “exam”.
What a joke.

@ey
That is how pro business laws are written and capitalist companies maximize profit. The worker protectionism has disappeared over the last 40 years and phenomena is especially strong in Alberta.

Why are they hiring so many Indians? Why people from one country only? It’s not diversification, it’s a transformation. Useless & corrupted Liberal won’t say anything to those greedy Imperial leaders. Locals are ignored. Trump and middle eastern countries leaders always have the back of their own people. Their govt. regulate companies to hire locals. Unfortunately no one is talking about poor Canadians!

@bg It is no difference from when all the Canadian expats got sent to Budapest, Houston, Singapore, Thailand, and even China (Jim B, just an example). Every expats got so happy with the expat packages (and taking advantage of the local cheap cost of livings), and they think they are so great that no one can find any talents in those countries locally :-)

As a Canadian, I take no exception to bring foreign workers to close the labour gap.
However, unacceptable to saturate the Canadian labour market with cheap foreign labour.
Call your MP and ask what is their plan to resolve. I know my local MP is not doing anything. But keeps getting elected playing the identity politics. Yeah !!!!

We are f*cked

Is that worse than Canadians being sent to the US to take US jobs?

You can't tell me there isn't an American on the gulf coast that can't do a safety or operations job that some Canadian is filling.

I don’t think it’s only about saving costs. It really feels like a strategy to get closer to the buyer.

It's bad for Imperial and will reduce quality of work overall for Canada and increase costs. But it's what EM told IOL mgmt and Board of Directors to do, so they're just following marching orders from Houston. It's frustrating and sad to see.

Many oilfield companies in Canada hire work visa people to fill diversity requirements for way less. Canadian citizens are pushed out, laid off.
