Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

A warning for anyone young and ambitious

If you are smart and you want to build a career, leave T. The managers don't know what they are doing, you aren't allowed to take any initiative, and the only path to success is making your boss and their boss happy regardless of whether you actually do good work. If that's your jam, so be it. But if not, just do yourself a favor and leave.

The reason this statement is true? Because T decided that being oldER is grounds for surplus’s. Watched it for years, then it was my turn. So they cut out the experience, the brains. There used to be great leaders and great managers. But then they got to be too close to 60 and were “ki-led off.”

Get your experience in, use them, because they ARE using you. Leave before you are too far into your 30’s with experience and the giant’s name on your resume’. Don’t give them 20-30 years; they are NOT loyal and WILL trade you off for the hot new young thing.

All new college grads that are thinking about AT&T as a career should read this article on AI. AI is bad enough without having to put up with all the additional requirements that AT&T places on your employment.

@eg it’s a job. A job is better than no job. That’s about it. If something better comes along, I’ll be out. I’m market based.

I did not hate it, but no matter what metrics were made, if the leader did not like you, or if they feel some kind of weird way, don't be ambitous oh and don't be a high achiever. Still it's a great way to feed your family, but it may deplete your soul.

Anyone with any level of ambition left T a long time ago.

“There is no collaboration. The only thing anyone talks about is non work related or how they wish they weren’t there.”
If this is true, it’s time for you to leave. You are not the type of employee AT&T needs.

@ez there is no collaboration. The only thing anyone talks about is non work related or how they wish they weren’t there. You need to wake up. It’s 2026, 99% of work is done from a computer. Face to face is no longer needed. We sell a connectivity and communication service. WTF are we doing???

If you have been here for 13 years, it must be a good place to work and the company is taking care of you.

If you’re a union person, this place is great and is a great career. Those guys have it really good. Great retirement, medical, nice bumps in pay and as much OT as they want. That’s why they post what they do, it’s great for them, they just don’t understand and refuse to comprehend the other side.

However, if you’re an office worker, 3-5 years and bounce. Do not stay longer. Life has a way of su-king you in and you get stuck. I’ve been here 13 years, could have left many many times several years ago, then things progressively got worse and worse in leadership and the policies, should have left when I got several offers during Covid, but decided to stay. Now the job market is trash and anyone over 45 has an impossible time getting something else (filtered by AI which has now been proven in court). After 40 it’s hard, after 50 even harder, so don’t stay and get old here. If I get 8 more years I’ll retire early.

“There’s no real reason to be in the office 5 days.”
Except that this is a defined requirement for the job.

I have been here close to 16 years where I could have exited any time after 8-10 years. I was chasing that promotion that I never got but in turn worried about location stability all the time. Now things are different and I recommend only to stay until you can find another job. However you will not get the same benefits as T in terms of vacation or pay per throughput. T has helping people that are now exiting and the future is unknown. Connecting changes everything and they literally mean that to have good connections for growth here.

Been here 10 years. Really like my job, team, and the work we do. Quite honestly the only thing I don’t like is the 5 Day RTO. I was virtual before and after Covid. I now spend over 10 hours a day in the office to get all my work done and it’s just too much with the 3 hours of commuting on top. There’s no real reason to be in the office 5 days. Any benefit they like to pretend are there could be done in 3 days. If it doesn’t change soon I’ll be taking my talents elsewhere.

T is a great started job. Just don’t stay more than 5 years. Definitely not 10 or more like so many who are now at a dead end with no other employment options.

retired t employee here.. i agree completely. If you are young and want a fulfilling career.. get out while you can. I remember finishing up my master's and working for t and attempted to apply some derivative theory i just learned in my managerial economics class... and my supervisor said to me firmly "we dont do that here"... now i was not trying to one-up anyone.. just thought this approach would really fit well based on the issue. I stayed around because of other life events.. but i regret that now.. don't hang out and be miserable like i was.
