Return to Office

I heard a rumor today that a 5 DAY return to the office announcement is coming! Has anyone heard anything about this?

@j1b If you are far enough enough away from an office (probably 35 miles or more), and there is limited space at the nearest office, you likely won't get called back into the office anytime soon.

@c4t All these CEO's who mandate the 5 day in person work week, don't really care. As it doesn't affect them at all. They have a private driver who drives them to work, or they take a helicopter, etc. And I'm sure if their commute is far, they have a place either next door, or even in the same building, where they can crash if they work late. They have ALL the privileges.

Don't get me wrong, their schedules are grueling, and they do put in long hours. But, it seems they have little to no understanding of what the normal employee feels and has going on. While the top level executives have MORE than enough money to pay for assistants and child care, etc for their families, the average employee is probably barely above living paycheck to paycheck.

@c50

I was hired 100% remote several years before covid, in a state where there was no PNC tech hub, and I was told I have to now go into an office.

@j0w To those who have the attitude of "Grow up, stop complaining, and come into the office to work, everyone has done it for almost 100 years, etc".

My reply to that view is we need to be balanced and reasonable about this. The ONLY reason why work in the past required being in office/in person was that it was the only way to collaborate easily. Prior to the advent of PC's, and fast internet connections, in office was the only choice.

But in today's world, with technology which makes remote work as productive, and sometimes more productive than in office, there's NO reason for the hard line 5 days a week mantra. The real reason behind this 5 days a week mantra is corporate real estate, plain and simple. You had/have all these almost completely unneeded and unnecessary office space sitting empty. And the banks want to prevent a corporate real east crash.

IMHO, if your job is easily done remotely, and you live within say 30 minutes of the office, a 2 or 3 day in office schedule is perfectly reasonable. If you live say an hour away, maybe a 1 day week in office, if only so that no one forgets who you are. If you live further than an hour, then fully remote, but maybe come in once a month, or a couple times a year, depending on how far you are.

And some jobs, always require in-person. No one is saying that maintenance works, or assembly line workers, or salespeople, tellers, etc should work from home. We need to use the reasonableness principle

We received the announcement today that RTO will be five days a week. Morale has taken a hit, and people are now scrambling—updating their résumés and reassessing next steps. The world has changed, and a five-day, in-office requirement no longer reflects how work is effectively done today. Upper management is so disconnected from us .

@j0w Okay Boomer.. You're living in the past. We have the technological advancements to do the same work whether its home or the office. This isnt the same workforce it was 10 years ago. My work should reflect on results, not where I work..

All of you had better learn to grow up! Companies have always had employees in the office and COVID has ruined this. Whether it be parking, lunches, or drive time - that's what working is all about. Co-workers in my department all got "mental excuses" - anxiety, panic attacks, etc. to escape. This is not fair to the general population. If you can't work in the office then you should not have a job. Funny how people for decades have come in and put their time in for 50 years and retired - all of you need to grow up and quit complaining. You can't communicate when you're in the office but can find time to right complaints here.

@hs1 nobody knows… wait and see. Knowing who’s making the decisions expect it to be a decision that doesn’t benefit employees. He was very against letting people work from home even during the height of COVID.

@hrz Would that count even for those hundreds of miles from a hub?

@hrn you are much more likely than not going to be asked to go in, even if you were hired as fully remote

@hrb curious myself. I've heard mixed arrangements of yes and nos

@h0y does every one needs to go to office even though they are joined as remote?

@czq I wonder if he is even taking into consideration that Mondays and Fridays are heavy vacation days too. He mentioned overall productivity is down on those days. I can't even imagine going back into the office. I was only in the office 2 days a week for years before covid and have been 100% remote since then.

@c4t I heard at one of the recent line of business town hall Bill Demchak said that he believe employees are gaming him because in office swipe are less on Monday's and Friday's.

@c5h I have never heard of parking reimbursement or any of the things you speak of. And I live in Pittsburgh, 50 minute/42 mile commute and pay $24 a day to park.
Honestly I would call ERIC or talk to you manager. To get correct answers.

@c52 I was made hybrid recently, and my commute is over 45 miles. There are already people at certain upper levels that were fully remote but now have to work in a local branch five days a week, due to the state they moved to having no corporate sites.

@c5d it’s no longer valid? Mine is 25 mins into a different state. 500 a month to commute in tolls and that’s not counting gas. 100 dollars to park and double the tax. So I think this stuff should be taken into consideration

@c50
So the 35 miles is no longer valid. Your manager will know the exact ‘rules’ in place now. I believe if it is over an hour drive, you do not need to travel but it keeps changing, so I may be wrong.
Even if you go one day a week, you should NOT be traveling hours to get to work.

So is this affecting all remote workers? My department was created remote after the pandemic. Fully remote. Operations department. I’ve never stepped foot into an office. I was told if you’re more than 35 miles away from an office you’re safe and stay remote. If you have an office close and it’s in a different state, you pay taxes in 2 states and there’s no salary increase.

So is this for all remote workers?

@a97 I do recall it being mentioned that fully remote teams would likely stay remote, but I must have missed the ‘hybrid before covid’ comment. I’ll have to see if I can watch a replay.

Return to Office Mandates Don’t Improve Employee or Company Performance

Before Covid there was flexible work. Five day RTO with no flexibility takes us back in time before working at home wasn’t an option.

@a4y This is correct. It was also very briefly mentioned in the meeting that if you were hybrid or remote before Covid, you would remain hybrid or remote.

Additionally, current rumor is the email from Bill outlining RTO will be sent January 2026 with a return date of around 4/6/2025. Another rumor say April in general. Some areas are getting more information than others.

On an IRM-wide meeting today, employees were told that an announcement would be coming from Bill in early 2026 about RTO 5 days a week.

There’s infrastructure updates happing right now to support the full RTO theory. There was a push to have these updates ready in October, but they won’t be finished until early 2026. I think that’s why there hasn’t yet been any official announcement. They know they’re going to lose people once it’s announced. It’s unfortunate, because although I enjoy working here, the flexibility was the main benefit for me personally. With compensation as low as it is and the rise in medical benefit costs, working at PNC simply isn’t going to be worth my time any longer if I have to commute 5 days a week. I’m polishing my resume right now.

I hope the executives read these comments because I would like to say something. With the economy, the way that it is this is the absolute worst time. A decision can be made to have everyone work five days in the office. A lot of of us are struggling to put food on the table and just have ample transportation to get to work. And now I have to invest more money in buying clothes because I have to come into the office. The cost of everything has gone up. Even though I’m appreciative of the little bit of a raise, I get I’m still going backwards year by year because the expenses are going up and I’m not seeing any type of raise when that happens. I’m updating my résumé and I’m not going to wait. Without the flexibility and work life balance, this will be a real struggle for me.

I is true all employee are going to be required to return to office 5 days a week starting in April. This is including employee that were hired remote they are going to send out new offer letter to those employee state they report to a certain office building with l I ttle to no flexibility. I think it is time for the employee to get together and talk about unionizing.
