Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Am I Naive?

To think the VSP is the morally right thing to do and the company really doesn’t want to lay off people who want to stay. Maybe because I have seen jobs dissolve and they try to place those displaced in other positions.

I guarantee that if the calculations were $1 cheaper to do a mass layoff over a VSP. The mass layoff would be the option. There are no morals, just $$$.

@bw A VSP happened at another company I was at. When you volunteer, you are more forthcoming when leaving. It’s imperative to have knowledge transferred when you plan a large scale layoff. Having the VSPs train contractors/offshore is stage 1 in the master plan of sending jobs overseas. After this then there’s nothing stopping management to inflict their will on the rest.

+1 million to the first comment in this thread. The VSP is being offered because it financially benefits Centene to reduce the number of layoffs.

I’ve seen Centene staff posting all over LinkedIn about how humane the VSP is and I can’t figure out if people actually believe this or if they just feel that they need to be part of the spin machine.

If they really wanted to "try to place those displaced in other positions" then they wouldn't have been hiring external contractors the last several weeks to replace them. AND they are outsourcing many peoples positions.

I think it’s a little naive… I want to stay, but I also applied for the VSP. while there are some folks who are like “PEACE OUT SU-KAS!” that’s not the case for me and a lot of other people who applied.

I’m invested, but that doesn’t mean the company is invested in me or can afford me at this time. I’m not risking getting cut with no nest egg.

I don’t think this VSP option should be seen as employees saving other employees. if they were going to get cut, they still will be. maybe it’ll save a couple of people in some departments if their teammates decide to leave.

however, if the organization is about to gut entire functions, other people leaving will not stop that from happening. all of this is just a smokescreen.

none of us know where the organization is choosing to focus right now.

I guess I am naive too. I feel like the company is fairly offing us a compensation package and allowing the employees that are not as invested a way to opt out, leaving the more invested employees a better chance to stay. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to get laid off. I am also not d-mb enough to know that the company is making out by us quitting. I’ve seen too many people just laid off with nothing. It’s nice to have the opportunity to come out a little ahead.

Yes. There are tax and legal reasons for a VSP. Companies are not being “moral”, the number of layoffs they want to do in a short amount of time will result in … below … They did the math and this is the cheapest option given the amount of layoffs planned. This is why you have to be “approve”, there’s a number to hit and some states are better than others.
