Talking to my manager earlier this week about my imminent promotion, he warned me bonuses and pay bumps this year aren't as good as he had hoped and to calibrate expectations. Then he commented something like "who knows though, the pool is still changing and may change last minute"
Is that true? Do managers still not have a set amount of money to allocate to people? It's crazy to me that even now it could change.
Board may have not voted yet. Your individual take of the pool is set by now. They could increase or decrease the pool.
My boss said that it’s still in calibration and they aren’t communicated or loaded until after 01/23 when all reviews are done.

Only change I know is there is no compensation communication time frame yet. Normally there will be 3 weeks to deliver performance review, and last week of Jan to give compensation number to everyone.
until it shows up in your bank account everything is subject to change. also, in terms of this year's numbers it will very by LOB. for my LOB, merits are down compared to last year whereas bonus is flat.

Bonus is based on your level before promotion. Merit increase is based on promotion. Generally you won't see much change in bonus this year, but should be an increase in base.
