Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Can management block/prevent you from transferring to a different team?

Looking to apply to another team internally but wondering if I don’t have any backup if management would prevent me from being transferred over.

I have transferred between teams a few times with some being very easier and others being more difficult. The driver tends to be the new manager and if they will push your old manager to cut the strings and get you transitioned. Moving to a good manager definitely makes the process really smooth but if you are moving from a dysfunctional manager they can make things painful.

@bj no you fool … 2-6 weeks from accepting the offer/telling my manager I was leaving the team to starting with the new team.

Moving roles not moving location

Anytime I transfered internally it was 2-6 weeks and some cross training for the first 2-4 weeks in the new role. Left TIAA a few times and only gave 2 weeks notice. Then got severed with over a year notice for Denver closure.

It was brutally painful. If I were you I'd look for a job outside of TIAA (Vanguard/LPL in Charlotte) or anywhere but this dumpster fire of a company.

@b3

Discussed you moving as in different roles? Or actually relocating to a different office? In a similar boat, I heard all jobs are being open for Frisco only.

Yes and no-
No in that if the other manager will take you they can’t block you.
But at the second interview with the new team your old manager is notified and in my experience (having moved internally twice) you old manager and new manager talk and your old manager can put in a bad word on you to the new manager and that can ruin your chances. I know folks who have been stuck due to this. I also have had a situation where two levels up they discussed me moving before it happened.

Both times I’ve moved, I was required to work both jobs for a month for the transition.

Yup, if you don’t have additional people in your team or coverage they can and will deny you

In the past, I’ve done this and a couple times I had to delay my move for like a week. Never been blocked from transferring
