Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Wireless / Wireline animosity

There are too many posts on this board expressing animosity between the wireless and wireline sides of the business. If you’re contributing to this animosity, you should stop! It’s silly! I’ll explain why below.

One recurring theme is that wireless couldn’t survive without wireline. Way back when, all wireless operators used T-1s and DS-3s and that generated quite a bit of revenue for the LECs. As capacity needs increased, they shifted to fiber about 20 years ago. There are a lot of fiber providers so wireless is no longer dependent on wireline but getting fiber from your own company is better for the balance sheet. Would you rather we paid AT&T for fiber?

It’s also true that wireless was initially financed by wireline but so what? Wireline saw an opportunity and they took it. T-Mobile was financed by investors outside of wireline and they’re doing just fine.

In short, wireless would do just fine without wireline and wireline would do fine without wireless but they are better together because there are significant synergies including bundling services. So stop this silliness! There’s enough drama and nonsense in the company and you don’t need to add to that.

@as Verizon provides backhaul for other cell providers as well.Verizon leases fiber from companies like AT&T, Comcast, and Crown Castle outside its primary footprint,it regularly sells backhaul services to those same companies inside its own footprint to optimize costs and deployment. I suppose they could sell it off . I dont know but I do know a 10 gig pipe aint what it used to be. Most of the co eqpt is becoming obsolete .

@b5 We’ve been one company since 2014. In addition, Verizon moved the wireless products and services into the Verizon Consumer and Verizon Business, divisions and stopped using the Verizon Wireless name in 2019.

You’re up to speed now!

@aq Verizon wireline isn’t the only option for backhaul to a cell site. There are many competing fiber providers. The days of LEC monopoly are long gone so you need to bring your thinking up to date.

@aq As stated originally "There are a lot of fiber providers" including AT&T, Comcast, Crown Castle (now Zayo), etc... and wireless has used them to connect dem cell towers when Verizon fiber wasn't available. Wireless prefers to use Verizon owned fiber and pay another department within the same company instead of giving more business to a competitor. I hope that's not too hard to understand!

Money staying within the company = good!
Money going to a competitor = not great!

so dem cell towers ,how they linked together and how does the "cloud" work ?Wireline is crucial to VZ . At least for now

I think they hate wireless because wireless isn’t union. Either that or because for years the company invested in wireless while neglecting wireline. But I agree it’s time to act like one company.

@OP but combining back to one group - VZ 1.0 would sure remove a lot of overlap and reduce opex dramatically.

@OP what is wireline and what is wireless? I thought we were past that point by now. We are Claude and Gemeni and perhaps another group will show up as Cursor....Dan :)
