Thread regarding IBM layoffs

PIP/unemployment benefits question

If an IBM employee is put on a PIP - say for example - Seller not making their quota (assuming nothing else was a problem), and the employee is terminated as a result of the PIP, will IBM fight unemployment pay? I have received conflicting information. One person was adamant that the only ways to not be able to claim unemployment are 1) the employee quit on their own 2) insubordination.

I will never work for IBM again. My first real adult career job back in 2015. I thought that they had jobs available. Nope its all project based. You compete with others for a project. I was trying to get on a project, remote right out of the Lansing, MI center. My manager, Pilton, told me not worry about that (applying) as I was on a PIP and had to get on any project at this time. He had 2 other interviews in the pipeline. I did both interviews and they seemed good to me. When it was my last day, never did find out if i got on those teams. My manager, first thing when i went to the office, he handed me some unemployment forms, and said " Oh I wish you would have gotten on that one remote project.". I said "What, the one you told me not to fully apply too". Made him feel like sh-t after on purpose. Walked out the door with my head high, and onto other adventures.

You’ll get your unemployment because if not IBM would be opening themselves to a lawsuit if they just let you go because of a PIP

I believe all states unemployment agencies know that IBM is constantly laying off people that is should be no problem collecting unless you quit. Mean while polish up your resume and get it out there.

Yes, you can typically get New York State unemployment insurance if fired for failing to successfully complete a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).

From the NY State website: "You may be eligible for benefits if your employer discharged or fired you because you could not meet their performance or production standards, or their qualifications for the job"

https://www.ny.gov/services/get-unemployment-assistance

Suggest you check with the state where you will file for Unemployment. The answer is probably on their website in the FAQs

@aj yes, it’s basically impossible to get it if you quit

Always always always apply for unemployment THE VERY FIRST DAY after you stop working. Most states make it very easy to apply online or via phone. Then usually you have to document what you did during the week for a job search. It is not onerous. I have seen many people feel ashamed or embarassed about unemployment. DO NOT! I do not think most firms FIGHT against you to get it. I have never heard of IBM fighting it. Generally if you quit you do not qualify unless you can prove for good cause: unsafe conditions, non-payment, harassment etc.

@a5 I agree. The first time they marked me as a low performer whe the had to pick one in the summer from each group of six I got something that said like 70 percent of those on PIPs are still there but it’s bs at my site. I went on coaching and that people get off but the other three from my dept who were picked all went on PIP and got fired, I didn’t get a PIP but knew I’d at least be part of layoff if not put on a PIP the following year so I found another job (much lower pay but advertises job stability).

PIP is bullsh-t. You probably don’t deserve to be on it but arguing and defending your case falls on deaf ears. Best to start looking for new job right now and get out. You now have a timer on you.

It depends on the state . In NY as long as you are fired for something like incompetence (not breaking company policy ) they can’t do much to fight you collecting unemployment, chronic absenteeism though they can fight .
