@kq Trust the process and DE's plan. There will be no layoffs this year.
@g5 How'd you acquire such a taste for boot?
James Faris has the scoop.
I vividly remember the one they did right after the super bowl in February. They sent emails touting how much of a great success it was and then bo-m, layoffs. They definitely have done them in October and November previously. I think the last major buyout was in October so that people could wrap up or handoff their work by the new year.
With Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter aligned in November, the planets appear to be signaling a period of stability. Based on the alignment, I don’t expect any Paramount layoffs in November or December.
@bm elaborate
It’s usually post VMA’s
rolling layoffs since before 2000
@fj I don't think so. DE wouldn't lay people off before/during holidays.
@c8 honestly every round of layoffs i remember when i was at paramount was around october-nov
@fb I have been through multiple rounds of layoffs at Big entertainment companies, and they always happened in November. As someone else pointed out in this thread, this merger has been expected to close in Q3 since the deal was conceived so most of the decisions have probably been locked and loaded for a while now. And if you think DE is going to take the holidays or any employee morale into account, I just have one word (acronym) for you…RTO. Nepo Baby is and will always be a businessman first and foremost, so don’t get your hopes up.
No one should delude themselves into thinking the layoffs won't happen before year's end or such b.s. This merger has been on the books for months and drama in the press aside, the joining of teams, analyzing redundancies, etc. went forth. They have the names and numbers. Just need to pull the trigger. And yes, it can happen right before the holidays. Last year's blood bath was the than 2 months out from them
@fb variety has an article out now where an anonymous exec says there will be a race to get the layoffs done in the fourth quarter. And they don’t see a world where there they’re not laying off a bunch of people before end of year
Paramount - SD merger closed in early August, and the layoffs happened at the end of October. So a little less than 90 days. If Paramount - WB deal closes within next 2 weeks, I think that lands the layoffs into late Dec early Jan territory
Even for DE laying off people right before Christmas sounds too evil. I am wondering if they'll push towards early February before their Q4 earnings call on Feb 25. For a merger of that magnitude I think they might need more time to prep.
I know someone in Warner's financial department and layoffs on their end due to merger where planned in the budget already a year ago, so they are definitely happening. I think it's probably the same on our end.
@bc Keep telling yourself that. The last two rounds of Paramount layoffs happened at exactly this time of year. And I have been in other big companies where they always layoff at the end of the year. Big corporations like to start the new year with fresh financials. And DE had been planning on this merger closing in the fall for the better part of a year, so I would almost guarantee that layoff plans are already solidified. But time will tell…
I don’t think DE would lay people off in this economy.
The WB folks can't be any worse than the Pluto folks, amirite?
@a9 I doubt the majority of layoffs will be at the end if the year. We're in a brand new broadcast cycle, and there's too much institutional knowledge to transfer. We still need people to make shows, movies, etc. Look how long it took to reduce our cbs redundancy (and it's probably still not gone).
@aq I suspect the labor concessions would be more related to production. They had already admitted they needed to find $6 billion and cost savings when they started the merger talks And they are not going to keep duplicative roles in the company. The lawsuit with the AG’s Was definitely more concerned with how it would impact California’s bottom line in terms of film revenue.
As Pauly says, "Fu-k you, Pay Me"
From what is being said on the merger concessions is there are some labor guarantees. I can see a much more aggressive buy out policy for both companies and much stricter work in the office rules. Hopefully more people leave on their own.
@af When has ANYTHING been so logically clear-cut in this company? While I'd prefer that option, I think your magic eight ball may need another shake.
I seriously think most of the layoffs will be at WBD cause we have been through more layoffs than they have.
agree. guarantee it will be before eoy. great
100% shocked if they don’t happen by end of year
