If I decline to move, any ideas on what the timeline looks like to get the official layoff notice? I hear that puts me on "the list" but I'm more curious what that means for timeline / budget purposes. I want to find a new job, but I want to do it in the right order.

Got my letter to accept/reject a relocation in October with two weeks to decide, surplus letter in February with two weeks notice. But a team mate who got the same October letter didn’t get surplus until April and our boss got his surplus in June.
Guy in my group (HQ eng) got one of those move letters. He said he has 18 months to move, if he decides to move (think he has to let them know his decision in like 2 weeks). He has to move to either Atlanta (~150 mi) or Dallas (~930 mi).
they cant give any answer, HR personnel says "as your supervisor" they can hold you up to a fu--ing year or 2 weeks. they are not fair. we are being just used.
Some orgs are straight to surplus. It’s up to you to move pending your station in life. No career growth if not in Dallas.
All kidding aside each BU does it differently based on business needs. I’ve seen some in my org go quick and others that lasted a while but they all were let go for sure, there’s no sacred cow that I’ve seen.

See if you can find out the people who are going to move and see what their latest move date is, it's sometime between then time you say you don't want to move and they have to move.
Depends what the magic 8 ball says when they get to your name…
