Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Who is affected in terms of Layoffs? (No BS Talk)

All these posts are full of trash talk. We have all been here before and expressed all of our opinions. I just want to know the rumors/facts people have came across. Do you know what teams are being hit by layoffs?

@ae because it’s considered ‘voluntary’ — you volunteer to leave and are compensated for doing so. They aren’t laying you off … your decision vs theirs.

Centene Corporation is slashing 2,000 jobs through a voluntary buyout program, marking the most aggressive workforce reduction yet by the nation’s largest Medicaid insurer

I have been through this before with another company. Even after the number of VSP was exceeded there were still layoffs. Be prepared…..

I am thinking about it. I'm tired of every 2/3 years we have to worry about layoffs. I've been here 10 years. Might be nice to take severance, get my 401k, and take a few months off while I figure out my next move.

Funny how we have record breaking years all the time and we saved a billion dollars in cost savings, yet workers have to be on the look out for layoffs all the time.

@ak honestly if more ppl in your situation are willing to take this offer, it will help those that do not want to leave yet. This is a good option for those ready to retire or those who were already planning on jumping ship. At least, you would not be leaving without something as the plan was to leave soon regardless

I know a lot of people are worried about unemployment with VSP vs layoff ...

Even though you “voluntarily” leave, most states treat certain buyouts like layoffs if:

The employer is clearly reducing workforce (RIF, restructuring, downsizing)
You were given the option to leave or risk being laid off anyway
The program is part of a company-initiated separation plan (like Centene’s VSP)
👉 In these cases, states often consider it “no fault of your own”, which is the key requirement for unemployment.

One nuance to be aware of
Even with a layoff, your benefits can be affected by:

Severance pay -Some states delay benefits while severance is being “paid out”
PTO payout - Usually not disqualifying, but can affect timing

@a6 thanks for your input. I will definitely be taking the offer if I’m eligible/accepted. I’ve been here 22 years. I was planning to retire by the end of the year. This is perfect timing for me. I feel for those who are not in my situation and I hope it works out for all.

I started in January so I won't be eligible for the VSP. I'll probably just get a good old fashioned aging.

@ae because you voluntarily left. If you just get laid off and are offered severance, then you would get unemployment after the severance is exhausted.

@a6 I've only been with the company 11 months. So you're saying I won't qualify for the VSP. Does that make it more likely that I would just be laid off since I haven't reached a full year with company? Just trying to figure out what my odds are at keeping my job. My team has had a very low workload so I assumed this was coming . I would like to know what the major factors are that go into determining who will be laid off.

@ae VSP is voluntary. Like quitting. You get VSP severance or you wait and see if you get laid off with possible severance and unemployment.

VSP is possibly an option for people close to retirement who would make more on VSP payout than unemployment. Or people who are risk tolerant and feel they can easily find a new job.

But nobody knows the terms until we get an email.

Does anyone know how the severance pay is calculated??

Excerpt from the email from Tanya McNally (Chief People Officer): "Note that certain employee groups are ineligible for the VSP [Voluntary Separation Program], including very senior executives, newly hired team members, as well as those engaged in specialized roles and certain core initiatives projected to last beyond the conclusion of the VSP. Throughout the day tomorrow [Tuesday, June 16, 2026], employees will be receiving emails from 'Centene VSP' confirming whether they are eligible. Those who are will be directed to additional resources that will help with the application process. Importantly, the VSP will be offered for a limited period, and team members will only have until July 2 to decide if they want to participate."

What is the advantage of applying for VSP? Short of volunteering to exit on your own terms, inflected selected, it seems like you’d still get severance and what not if you just waited for a layoff.

I guess if you are already on the verge of accepting a new role you might as well apply and work both ends of the deal.

That sounds kind of appealing actually.

@OP PL here - Sr. Director. Almost everyone across the company with more than 2 years of service is going to get the VSP email. It's not personal, so don't take it as a sign that your department/position/team is in trouble. And getting the email tomorrow doesn't mean you are more likely to be targeted for layoffs down the road. This is meant to be a broad initiative aimed at keeping the number of involuntary separations (and unemployment payouts) in September to a minimum. The company doesn't expect many people to take the VSP, but is hoping that even the smallest savings now will help come end Q3.

@OP All markets are in jeopardy due to the BBB from the Trump administration. You can choose to take severance, which is the VSP and get no unemployment or you can take your chances..

@a2 I'm on a small team and part of the mission simplify projects. Would su-k to work so hard for their goal just to be cut. But we all know how it goes - we are replaceable and not valued.

Here is what I know. There are not specific teams/markets being targeted. Likely expect about 80-90% of the company will be offered a VSP. Just because you sign up for the VSP does not mean you will be selected to receive it as they cannot decimate a department by letting too many people go. One you choose to accept a VSP there is no taking it back if you are selected and you change your mind.
