Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Leadership

Hi all. My partner works in design and I’ve been hearing stories about leadership and making his job harder. Just curious-who is responsible for leadership? Who’s making sure they are doing a good job?

@a4
Same.
Leadership, including directors and managers, are sweaty, insecure narcissists chasing irrelevance.

@bj get a book, read an article or ask xhatgpt how does corporate governance work. It explains what you ask, at least theoretically. Owners elect a board. The board oversees the executives. The executives manage us. (Remember in the movie AIR when knigh says he needs to ask the board?)

Lmao these comments are spot on. Nike Design leaders are the only people who can operate at SD and VP level and not be expected to understand customer engagement metrics, a P&L or the most rudimentary understanding of how our company operates. Ask your VP with big thick rimmed glasses what “NPS” means 🤣

@a3 you nailed it! They work for themselves and HR will protect them so it’s a waste of time to even consider “speaking up!” That whole process is designed to protect Nike and the offenders.

Unfortunately it’s all about who you know! Nothing that you say will matter! The HR team will view YOU as the issue! Get out!

“Design Leadership” is the holy grail of Nike jobs. There is no governance nor evaluation metric associated with performance. Smooth sailing.

When design/designers appear to work 3 days a week, refuse to meet with project teams on Mondays and Fridays and proudly declare that they used AI to generate designs why wouldn’t “management “ take a closer look and maybe turn up the heat?
Design “talent” is the biggest money sink in Nike’s product creation pathway.
There are way too many mediocre designers and way too many mediocre design managers.
Add that to a risk-averse Innovation org NSRL and you have plenty to consider.
A great start would be to cut Sr Leadership in Design, innovation and the NSRL

Leadership governs themselves. They are not held to the same standards as general employees.
