Are we always safe from being laid off? It seems that’s the mentality in our group. Even though our work is getting less and less.

Wisconsin surplussed a few mobility cell techs a couple years ago, so no, you’re not safe
My area was fibered a few years ago. Last time I saw any techs was a few months ago. Had no warning and internet went down late. Saw techs down the street and walked down to see what was going on. One of them said they were straightening out the records. Seems some of the contractors had used whatever pair they could get to install service. Not a fiber person but noticed that all what looked to be jumpers were disconnected on one side. They were finished by early morning. Go weeks without seeing a truck these days. Had 1 service issue and it was after a bad lightning storm. Fried something in the interface. Tech said that on a good day he might get 2 jobs a day and almost all of the contractors have been let go.
@a3 fiber core tech here, your correct on the fact that the company has gone all in on fiber but remember once a certain area is completely fiber ready they only need a few guys to maintain it!
doing new orders for circuits and other maintenance will not require the headcount some cities have right now!

Fellow mob tech here. Where I am there’s a mad dash to get rid of the older people. Like me lol. Almost 50.
Think H1B, Starlink, AST, and all the rest. I think the future is fiber to the home and satellite outdoors primarily. Still need cellsites but not as many. Also, the sites themselves have become so simple hardware-wise. It’s coming to where any id--t can do the job. We’re $60/hr at the end of this contract. If your coworkers think the company wants to pay our wages and all the rest, they’re a bit delusional. Good luck though.
