Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

RIF employees w/10+ years experience and give responsibilities to H1B contractor w/"3 years" experience.

How is that workin' for ya, Dan? Wait 'til the sh1tty designs start hitting the field next year creating interference issues that non of the H1B contractors will be able to figure out the cause.

@as - Umm, look at the past 7 or so hours :). This coasting will cost the company dearly (reputation, probable lawsuits, loss of customers, potential government intervention, ....).

To really address your input, though, It really depends on which people are fired and which jobs are on the "coast" setting. 5 years, I don't think so, at least for legitimate jobs. We see network maintenance cannot coast. Sales can coast a short time (until current customers erode away). Customer service, well, we see where that is getting us. RAN design, yes, for a while, then degradation in the RAN network will start showing up. For keeping up with the latest technology and network upgrades, there are many overlapping jobs to make this happen and if not kept up with, the network will become obsolete [relative to the competition] in a few years. I am sure there are many more examples, but the point is made.

Unfortunately, the company can coast on cheap contractors for quite some time on its 5-ish year roadmap kept rolling by distinguished engineers and associate fellows.

You should check out “HQ Voice Planning” on Confluence sometime.

@a7 "A person helps build a company". Uh ... no. The person in question traded his/her time for money. The company pays this person for the work they do and the profit they incur. It's that simple.

This has nothing to do with race. This is about firing fulltime employees with years of experience and giving the job to "someone else" to do, and do it with less benefits (less vacation, less job security, less long term incentive (401k), less everything). The "someone else" has much less experience and may feel less incentive to put a lot of effort into the job because they know they will not be there long.

A person helps build a company, then gets kicked to the curb so higher ups make more money. This is about GREED and consequences.
