Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Single parent here

I remember asking if there was a chance they’d reduce a day as gas prices climbed and was told no. Never mind how other people are abusing that but with prices going up I am pretty close to living paycheck to paycheck. I don’t want to bring it up again to the powers that be but it’s really getting hard. Every single thing is. The icing on the cake is the constant fear of a layoff every other week. Is anyone else going through this? I’m tempted to borrow from my 401K.

@ns the downvoting red hatters brigade doesn't understand sarcasm when they read it.

There's a alternative government plan for that - bicycles.

@da Is that the 2026 version of "new math"?
I know how you vote.

@da How does $20 extra a week in gas expenses come out to $180 a year?

@fa Another money-saving idea for making things great again in 2026 working America:
Discarded pizza boxes are an inexpensive source of cheese.

@cd I, too, am sick of the entitlement of the American worker who just expects their work to magically cover their expenses.

@OP You should spend your 401(k) money if you need to. It's your money. There's a lot more money in there than there used to be anyway. Don't forget to vote Republican in November and keep that 401(k) profitable to tap during short-lived lulls in the economy.

@ae u frontline workers are so whiny. During the pandemic, desk-based workers ‘won’ and you all ‘lost.’ Now with AI, the tables have nearly completely turned. Instead of complaining about hybrid/remote work, you can ‘upskill’ into one of our jobs and then get one of our severance packages. Otherwise, just shhhhh. If you wanted to really be remote/hybrid, you would’ve figured out how to pivot into that type of job.v

Gas prices are not the issue it's healthcare prices

So I have the same issue and have been ride sharing. I did this by mentioning within my group and with people I’m friendly with where I was coming from and that I wanted to ride share. I’ve found 3 people in my area willing to try it. Rather than exchanging money we meet at a park and ride and alternate who drives. It’s an easy way to cut gas, tolls, and wear and tear on your vehicle in half. Plus it’s been a good way to network and break up the monotony of a long ride.

@da your math isn’t matching. Let’s say an employee spends $50 a week on gas. That’s closer to $2600 per year. $180 won’t cover a month of communting.

@da where are you getting 180 from? It’s more like $1000 more. Is that you Trumpy?

@da 180.00 a year in gas? I dunno what you’re driving but i that might be a week depending on your work commute.

try creating a group internally for a ride share and share cost. consider yourself lucky to have a job. I was laid off in Nov and still havent found a job.

You realize that someone driving 10000 miles a year is only paying about $180 more a year in gas... right? I get that nobody likes to pay more for things but can we please stop pretending like gas prices are sending us to the poor house. Prices from everything else were inflated during covid and havent come down.

Look at Value- tons of leaders on that team never go into the office and they force the rest of us to go in. Lyons and his boys club are rarely ever seen in the office.

Borrowing from your 401k is never a good idea. It has a ripple effect many years down the road. Financially it would be better to take out a consumer loan from the credit union. If you have a financial advisor, please speak to them before you go down the 401k road. If you don't have one, you should get one.

Single parents who don't do office work and go to work every day. Can they have 2-3 days off for gas prices too?

I hear you -prices su-k but 3 days in is better than 5/week. Be careful with the ask, there are over 15k former emps who are home permanently since the Tiger took over. ATT was ruthless with their RTW and we don't want to go their model.
