Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Just sold my last Shell Share

I had a two decade long career at Shell. I held on to all the shares that I got through PSP and the discount. Two years ago Shell gave me the ol' heave ho severance package because I don't match the DEI quota for senior leaders (aka male on a 100% male team and I don't have either a tan, an alphabet letter, or an accent so I was the one selected to go). I was watching the Shell shares run up in value... but the nagging part was that while watching them climb XOM was climbing faster percentage wise... and for most of the time QQQ and nvidia were too. I kind of regret hanging on to Shell for a higher price when selling Shell and buying a better company would have done me better financially.

Selling Shell to buy a lot of different things would have been better. the idea of hoping your holdings are the winner is like staying with your first pick on the Monty Hall problem

SELL Sell SELL

Oil and gas stocks are dogs, made 100x on AI plays like companies that actually have the MW to install the compute needed. Oil sticks are for old people that want dividend income in retirement.

What happened to the comment about over-educated / under-accomplished neurotic cat ladies in HR? That one was pretty good.

@sd nobody not Indian wants to work/carreer in IT India. Other countries much better.

@sd The hard push on DEI came because of the potential for ESG scores to impact the stock price. Use of ESG scores may be diminishing, and if so, you'll it move away. But the EC will be careful first to make sure there is not a whiplash back toward ESG. ESG sounds like a good idea, but in actual practice it is a means of control, mostly from the political left. Like centrally-planned socialist economies, it looks nice on the outside, but it is an absolute cancer on the inside. The computational team could probably run some numbers on this and see it for what it is.

@s6

If DEI actually increased profits then they would replicate and scale DEI in India.

So why do they do they not do that? Surely India would be stronger with some Pakistani and Bangladeshi or Ukrainian war refugee workers. Right?

Okay, to be snarky and Trolly. Don't you think that increasing the DEI numbers is adding to the profit and increasing the share price and just adding justice?

No? Maybe they need to sponsor and virtue signal more publicly? They can write it up as "Brand Value" in the annual report. Honestly, doesn't it make sense to counter balance decreased profit with an intangible non-fungible thing like brand value. I'm so glad to have stacks of "brand value" sitting on my desk, it makes the loss of money more palatable. And honestly it the credible reason to hold Shell Shares.

@k9

100%

shell is doing nothing but cutting and buying back stock. it is doing worse compared to its peers, not better. it has slipped from the second largest market cap in oil and gas to the 4th. it has gone from comparing itself to exxon to comparing itself to chevron.

the stock rode a wave that every single other oil and gas stock rode, the straight of hormuz drama. shells future is to be gutted for parts. all signs point to this. shell is actually already doing this on its own in order to fund a dividend and stock buybacks that we cannot afford otherwise.

shell also has no idea how to run an asset. that’s why wael is running it like private equity. he can’t win as an oil and gas company due to our totally incompetent leadership so he just treats every business as a machine where money goes into one end and more must come out of the other or it gets sold for pennies on the dollar. he has no concept of the value of integration. as soon as shell trading has signs of problems he will leave. it will have problems eventually because you can’t trade at the top level without being an integrated oil and gas company that actually owns things. he will leave the rotting corpse with a golden parachute and thunderous applause.

Yall do not understand, without Iran war stock would be at 32 AMS stock. In the meantime company is eating itself with selling and stock buyback. Car crash waiting to happen.

@jp
invest to make the most money with the least risk.
XOM seems to return more money with lower risk. For example, they didn't cut their dividend also their price went up higher percentage wise compared to Shell.
It is comparative credible alternatives. We're not talking crypto, lotto tickets, long odds horse races, or wild exotic investments, nor are we talking about bonds or cd rates.

Loyalty to a long-held shares is rarely the best plan. Sure it is safe if you can count on a long run and have the ability to exercise a choice of when you sell.

Ask yourself, in 6 months is SHEL more likely to be worth $75(drop $20) or $100 (gain $5). Then consider whether the total Stock index would probably do better or worse percentage wise.

Do you think that the fundamentals support Shell staying at $95, or is it the war and embargos? What sort of crazy STUFF would it take for the share price to get any higher?

@jp

the question isn’t whether or not the shell stock is up. this is because the original post mentions other stocks that went up by more during the same period, which they would have bought with the money from selling shell stock two years

therefore, they lost money. when seeing if you made a good investment, whether or not it went up is a good start. but the proper method is see what else your money could have been doing that was better. perhaps you are the fool in the discussion since you don’t get it.

Isn’t shell stock up 30% in the last two years? Looks like you got a ton of value from holding, id--t.

@e6 do not worry about the comment made. You are freed now, adjusting after 20 years takes time. Enjoy the recovery to normal and come here to see that you made the best choice, whenever in doubt.

"Being bitter and insulting others on the way out isn’t a good look."
Was there a single insult in that post? Please point out the part that could be interpreted as an insult.

Bitter... well when you put more than 20 years into a place and do your job better than anyone else could or has since only to be fired so that they can check DEI virtue signaling, Yeah bitterness makes sense. I'm bitter. I'm also truthful and not insulting anyone. Remember that the settlement severance package is a settlement accepting payment that in writing acknowledges not suing for the discrimination for protected distinctions like age, race, religion, or s-x. So, yeah Shell acknowledges that they do this and pays you not to sue ... it is a settlement for the folks who are bitter for being fired for the DEI cause.
