Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

A Communications Company that Can't.

When we were DirecTV - a honest to god company, and not just some brand - our 3rd Levels and our Regional VPs would come to each yard at least twice a year and tell us what was happening. We could ask embarrassing questions and they would attempt to give an appropriately non-committal answer.

Wasn't perfect, but it mattered to us minions.

T has owned us for going on 4 years and I barely see my immediate Supervisor - once every two weeks at the most. Not that it's a bad thing. We get no information from above - everything we know about the direction this company is taking comes from Googling the news feeds or reading sites like this one.

So I ask - why does a communications company not communicate? Why doesn't John S. or Adrian D. visit anymore? Are they afraid of us? French Revolution perhaps - thinking that us serfs will wheel out a guillotine?

I'll tell you what we think - we think that T has no idea what to do or how to do it and is afraid of telling anyone - especially their own employees. But news flash to you Randy and Johns Squared, your customers sure as heck know the ship is sinking - hear it everyday from my clients.

DTV culture was more like that hot GF you just started dating, that would do anything to please you..ATT is the vindictive 300 pound ex wife that wants to leave you penniless and in the streets.

I remember when we first acquired DTV and I'd drive past DTV techs in their vans, they'd be waving with an ear to ear grin. It didn't even take six months for harsh reality to kick in and you'd drive past the same guys and they would be staring straight ahead with an angry scowl. This place is toxic.

In this company's case, we prefer that our upper level management NOT come and visit. Because management at this place are brainwashed, sociopathic automatons with any shred of humanity long gone. The higher up the management food chain you go, the worse they are.

Be careful what you wish for. There is a tendency to go in the two extremes, no comm. like yours or constant bi-weekly meetings that don't add anything, take too much time and at times it starts to feel like you are just been micromanaged. If YOU know what you are doing the less meetings you have the better.

@rzb...yep. By the time u pay for several different streaming services to get all the channels you want, the traditional catv, uverse, and satellite services are cheaper...and u don't have to log in and out of different services to watch TV....u just change the channel. What a concept! Newer is not always better!

I respect the post, but I’m not here to listen to a guy in a suit that has never put a tool belt on lie to me about the direction of the company. I’m here to get paid every 2 weeks.

Post is on point! Mobility does not share any road map with employees at lower levels. I never see my Level 2 or level 3 managers. Most admin support staff work from home and take 2 days to respond to email.

It is not just in the DTV part of the business. The person 2 levels up from me comes to our building every 2 or 3 months but NEVER talks to anyone 2 levels or below him. And by that I mean talk in the sense of not dictating policy. Never a "how's it going" or anything personable. When he leaves, everyone says how weird he is. Just doesn't seem to care or it's beyond him to associate with anyone below him. Yet somehow someone thought that's a good manager and at least twice.

@ZVpoOIx-rzb You are absolutely correct. The reason products like Netflix were so cheap was because they were trying to build market share and be the major player in the industry. There is no doubt once all these competitors go under and there is one or two streaming services dominating the market, the price will be similar to what cable costs. Not to mention, they will stop producing all this original content that is costing them a fortune. It's just a bubble, which is great for consumers, but when the bubble ends the free ride will be over.

I don't know why you're talking up DirecTV, cause just from common sense it seems the company used free promotions to drive up their customer base real high, in order to make their company look like an attractive company to buy. So now AT&T has to dump a lot of the unprofitable customers who never should have been customers in the first place cause they would never pay the actual price the service costs to run.

If the stuff on the news can be believed, all of this "cord cutting" isn't paying off. Rising prices on Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, etc, means that there isn't much of a savings. And right now, these alternatives don't seem to match the portfolio of stations on cable and satellite services.

So, I see reduction of subscribers leveling off for satellite and cable TV, at least for awhile.

@vng- the company is sinking! Wake up. As long as randy and friends are in charge we’re screwed. In fact I think we already are. Too late to the media game and lost sight of core business! Got to give it to t mobile strategy- keep grabbing the subscribers!

Maybe part of the difference is a small company which would be struggling and downsizing significantly due to cord cutters and a multi billion dollar company with hundreds of thousand of employees. If you are so unhappy and feel the ship is sinking then go find another job...
