Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T will hire 500 techies at the Houston job fair

Looks like the hunt for the cheap-pay college grads that are set to replace the longtime workers that will get cut has begun. 500 is not an enormous number for a company this size but i see these hirings as a beginning of a process of changing the company.

I think they have surplussed the people who had any talent at PR spin. This Houston "hiring" fair is a farce. From the news article:

"Turnaround Houston offers access to job training, resume writing, tattoo removal, social service agencies, educational institutions, counseling and intervention to help hard-to-employ Houstonians."

I'm sure that place will be swimming with potential tech talent.... Meanwhile Randy will be saying in his Okie drawl "Ah shucks, we can't find any talent here, try as we might."

Come on AT&T, you guys are better at bovine excrement than that. I realize there is an accelerated learning curve due to all the layoffs, but you need to step it up to give the least impression of sincerity.

Just a stunt, next up is they will say not enough local talent and skills is available so they will need to hire contractors from economically depressed countries.

Same old lies from Randy.

Oh please, read the artcle carefully. This is just another sleazy PR stunt.

Quote: The job fair, held in the Moody Community Center at 3725 Fulton St., is part of a city initiative to address barriers to employment. Turnaround Houston offers access to job training, resume writing, tattoo removal, social service agencies, educational institutions, counseling and intervention to help hard-to-employ Houstonians.

This is a job fair for the hard to employ. Do you think thousands of crack programmers will be there? What do you think Houston's hard to employ are like?

They can say the're looking to hire ten thousand people going in and not hire anybody because they didn't find anyone qualified. The fact that Houston is not a CZ should be a clue as to how little intention they have of actually hiring anybody.

They're just going to wave the flag and make a show of what a good corporate citizen ATT is and how much they value diversity.

This is ATT we're talking about. You can't tsake anything they tell the public at face value.

This is odd seeing that Houston is not a "Collaboration Zone" - What gives AT&T???

Maybe new grads in Texas are desperate for jobs but from what I hear, most recent grads have no interest in AT&T. They read the news and study business cases about companies so they know exactly what the deal is at AT&T.

I agree. I would, however, say that it’s a continuation of a process that started years ago with appendix J. The writing was on the wall then. The move to replace management with lower paid employees is a relatively new development. In a mature business where organic growth is difficult lowering costs across the board is required. Frankly, I’m surprised its taken this long to happen.

The new college grads are not eligible for pension. That’s part of this too. Reducing AT&T’s pension liabilities
