Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Curious, why so many job openings?

Considering the lengths Verizon is going to to get rid of a quarter of its employees, why in the world are there so many open positions right this moment at Verizon? Just check LinkedIn and Glassdoor, not to mention other sites.

What is the point of it all, then?

Verizon has no clue right now. I was laid off last year and one of the online employment places claimed they had a match for me. It was one of the Verizon, entry-level, work-from-home, customer service jobs. I have thirty-five years experience, including remote trouble shooting for the last ten years as a senior tech. So I applied and about three weeks later I got an automated email reply, something like, I didn't have the matching skill set for this position. A week later I got sent another automated message from Verizon, informing me about a position that matched my skill set. Yeah, you guessed it, it was the same job. I suppose I could have applied again and gone into an endless loop, but I have more important things in my life now, like yelling at the dogs to stop barking.

If I wanted to match the output of 2-3 departed combined I'd utilize the enthusiasm of someone new in role, eager to please.

Better for them to get rid of more senior employees who are earning a high salary and costly benefits and then higher temp employees at a lower rate with less benefits . It is business 101

So they are hiring in the new bees at a much lower rate so they can eliminate the higher earners. Its all about the bottom line.
