AT&T: Internet outages in North Texas are ‘likely unrelated’ to Monday fire

FORT WORTH

More than 24 hours after lightning struck the AT&T building in Richardson, causing an internet and cable blackout across North Texas, some customers say they are still having problems.

“Please cover the fact that there are still hundreds if not many more without broadband,” one man said in an email to the Star-Telegram. “It’s been 30 hours.”

When asked why some customer’s haven’t yet had service restored, AT&T’s Charles Bassett said, “The facility is back online so customer’s equipment should be working.”

OCT 18, 2PM, It appeared from the outage that all local U-verse service was routed through the affected Richardson switching station, Kingsley said. So when power was cut off, he said, U-verse modems reached out to Richardson hitting a dead end. Without power, the switching station couldn't tell users to go elsewhere.

Kingsley, who designs telecom backup system but doesn't have direct knowledge of the outage, said it's surprising that network facilities along the way weren't able to reroute customers. However, he said companies wouldn't necessarily plan for a complete loss of power.

@ATTCares

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Due to a direct lightning strike on one of our facilities in the area, we are experiencing internet issues. We are currently working to restore service as quickly as possible.

These people are spoiled. Try living in an area that your only option for internet is DSL.

My internet and cell service have been up and down all day. (And yes, I know how to do a hard reset.) If the problem was a fire/wiring damage, it shouldn't have taken a full day to repair.
