Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T culture

I am so tired of AT&T claims that there is some shortage of workers. This statement really gets me upset: AT&T CEO said that the lack of tech professionals who have the skills they need to compete in today’s increasingly technology-driven global markets is a US challenge, i guess They can’t find computer systems analysts, programmers and software applications engineers, especially with advanced degrees, to do what AT&T does which is non of the above

I received my B.S. in Computer Science in August 2001. Furthermore I HAVE an advanced degree: I received my M.S. in Computer Science in May 2006. At that time, I was 50. . I only want an entry-level programming job….just don’t make my primary job be to lug-around cases of paper, spreadsheets, and hosting pointless calls with people that do not understand technology,

After 18 years with the company, I was turned down for all the positions I did apply for, so I left AT&T and now work with a Global Technology company, after all it is up to you to value yourself

There are open jobs on the AT&T Career Path site, but on the MESA (surplussed employee's call with HR) some people I identified using webphone have the SAME position title as those jobs being offered in career path! Seriously, why surplus these existing on title people that sound very capable on the Mesa meeting? Not all of them are retirement eligible. There is some gaming of the surplus, as I just can't see AT&T letting these folks go when there are jobs that need filling.

offshore here

don't think it's better

T simply refuses to pay, for programmers, for network specialist, for devs

we have ppl running away from here, because other local IT companies are willing to offer double money

there are 2 major universities focused on IT in this city, so hundreads of absolvents every year and we have a serious problems to attract them

AT&T just wants to offshore as many ATO jobs as they can.

There's no shortage of domestic technology workers, only a shortage of domestic technology workers who'll work for the same amount as someone who just came here from overseas.

I predict Randall trying to get out in front of being fired or forced to resign. His story/legacy there was no available talent within or without to take T to the next level. Pure narcissism (personality disorder) at work. While they sink the ship it's always someone else's fault.

Your Boss had a big part in you not. getting the jobs, it is a cultural problem at AT&T, Have you ever noticed AT&T CEO spending lots of time talking about talent, innovation, Bla, bla, bla?...only to make the same mistakes over and over again?

Few things in business are as costly and disruptive as unexpected talent departures, and emphasis on leadership development, as the layoffs continue among our group there are 3 reasons why many wont stick around for too long, reasons vary but the majority don’t respect our manager, and don’t feel our career goals are aligned here anymore.

Here we have a manager without college degree, telling an engineer how to go about his projects

So, for all those senior managers who think that they have everything under control, you better start re-evaluating this toxic culture

The big T doesn't want capable bushiness associates even. I used to get paid for helping the technician "our customer" and now I get paid to transfer the tech around the world. This has caused a huge amount of stress on my heart and I'm so sad our call center isn't closing sooner thanks to the stupid Union. I rather have my severance package after almost 10 years of dedicated service helping the technician and the customer working for DIRECTV. I get it things have to change but the immoral practices of purposely keeping the technician on the phone fixing problems while on site with the customer is ridiculous. They do it on purpose so the technician gets tired of calling in for support so they have to fend for themselves how to fix breakages in software, and terrible terrible sales practices. How ATT get's away with this I have no idea.

Now AT&T is paying $88,000,000 to consumers for overcharging them. You know this means more layoffs because it's the Randall way. Glad they laod me off in 2015 because I work for a real company now with REAL leaders.

It's funny how Google, Facebook, Salesforce, Tesla, AZ are able to find and retain talent. The problem is 1) Randall's personality won't allow him to take responsibility for his failed leadership and ability to recognize talent and foster a culture that supports such talent, 2) and as a result must pass the buck on all he and Donovan "have done" with 2020 training (that essentially failed).

I was surplused a few months ago and doubled my salary at a tech company and I love the challenge and the cultural wellness.

Att doesn't really have a people problem. It has a leadership problem which causes talent to quit or become so isolated (because they are talented, passionate and misunderstood).

If the latter is you, start looking don't get stuck in dysfunction...it's a mojo killer that could harm your career long term.

American tech workers don’t buy it. The motivations behind AT&T push are all about suppressing wages, . Plenty of experienced native-born professionals are available to do the work but Guest workers do the same work for less money, solution that gives companies like AT&T an easy justification

Ignore the words and understand what T really wants is to pay very low wages.

The skills shortage is just a smoke screen to help justify off shoring jobs, it has no basis in fact, just more corporate lies which they are never held accountable for.

At one point working people looked to the democratic party to represent their interests but those days are gone. Today the democratic party is just GOP-lite without enough backbone to even pretend otherwise.

I never understand why the parents of young children are not screaming and yelling in the streets about the lack of future for their kids. These kids will never see a decent standard of living or a good quality of life.
