Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Pivot yourself Out of the JOB

While Donovan did not talk about the planned layoffs, Stodden said he would expect companies like AT&T to have a much leaner workforce going forward.

He noted that AT&T has had ambitious cost-cutting targets to cope with competition and declines in wireline services, such as residential broadband and parts of the legacy telephone business.

And he said, "as technology improves, productivity improves and you don't need as many people."

Donovan preferred to talk instead about how the company is preparing its existing workforce for the future.

Stephenson said over 150,000 people have gotten badges for new skills and capabilities through AT&T University, a program that offers certification and degrees. More than 2 million courses have been completed, he said

Participation in courses improves an employee's performance evaluation and can boost pay and the likelihood of a promotion

Donovan said tells employees that AT&T will give them a view of the future and provide the tools.

They just have to sign up and complete the curriculum to be part of our 2020 vision

Yeah, go with that pivot thing. Drink the Kool-Aid and take all those courses. I had taken over 500 courses, have certificates in Cloud Computing, IoT, several more. Didn't matter. You are nothing more than a line in a spreadsheet. I had exemplary reviews, the team I managed was considered a highly performing team. Nothing matters. Work on plan B. Because you're going to need one.

Donovan needs to pivot himself out. He is failing on all fronts delivering new products and better service.

Wake up and smell the coffee. It doesn't matter how many courses you take, what certificates you earn, etc. AT&T is cutting jobs to reduce costs. Period. Start implementing Plan B. The worse thing you can do is passively sit there, hoping the ax doesn't hit you.

I think pivoting is essential. The word as cliche as its becoming does have value. Here's the rub though I don't see how Donovan, Randall et. all are pivoting. There's not even a test/pilot program they can point too (with limited people/scope) that has been a resounding success. In my mind they failed almost every promising initiative/department, including the connected car, the foundry, ATT Labs.

And Randall is nothing but a follower with ADD who loves shiny new things. So NOW new media and content is where we should be. But we should have been there 6-7 years ago. I think we've had some crown jewels in our arsenal that these "leaders" couldn't monetize. Its not a people problem.

Its a leadership and visionary problem from throughout the ranks.

I've presented things that my AVP didn't understand and thus didn't like nor gave a chance. The same concept that my new technology company (after my recent layoff) absolutely LOVES and uses almost daily.

So you can pivot until the cows come home...but if you can't monetize, leverage or see the creative long range view...what does pivoting even matter.

It just becomes more noise as Randall et. al moves on to the next new thing.

Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One,

The problem with "jobs" at this company, iis the over use of the skills that our workforce development teams developed because they wanted you to learn those skills, but in reallity they don't add any value outside the ATT bubble

Over the last twenty five years, I have inhaled many complex technologies and spit them back out in different learning formats, in which I am really good, but that is a skill that I have developed, and that is something you can always take anywhere you go
