While Donovan did not talk about the planned layoffs, Stodden said he would expect companies like AT&T to have a much leaner workforce going forward.
He noted that AT&T has had ambitious cost-cutting targets to cope with competition and declines in wireline services, such as residential broadband and parts of the legacy telephone business.
And he said, "as technology improves, productivity improves and you don't need as many people."
Donovan preferred to talk instead about how the company is preparing its existing workforce for the future.
Stephenson said over 150,000 people have gotten badges for new skills and capabilities through AT&T University, a program that offers certification and degrees. More than 2 million courses have been completed, he said

Donovan said tells employees that AT&T will give them a view of the future and provide the tools.
