Unions: An outside perspective

EWA wife here. My husband is currently assigned to a field position in the north, which means he has a front row seat in this circus. Strikers chanting in circles, jumping in front of company vehicles and claiming intent, mobile picketing, and field customers unsettled by the union's aggressive attempts at intimidation. He takes it all in stride as we pad our savings and investment accounts. Although, the spitting and threats truly disgust me!

At home, our friends and neighbors that exist outside the VZ fishbowl could care less about the strike since it doesn't affect them. They still buy VZ and are happy doing so. Honestly, unions aren't even worthy of a passing cocktail party comment. Those that have something to say about unions often recall their personal experiences, depicting laziness, entitlement and unprofessionalism. I have observed that to be true based on the flame wars on this board and YouTube videos. I would laugh at the absurdity of it all if it weren't for the fact that my family is now being thrown into the history books alongside the union. The difference is we (EWAs) are on polar opposite sides by chance, which quickly morphed into choice through conduct and economic incentive.

Quite frankly, I hope VZ succeeds in their long-term plan to bust the union. People that behave like animals during a grievance don't deserve respect, middle class jobs or opportunity because such behavior indicates an inability to perform much less manage. Respect is earned and should not be given to anyone regardless of socioeconomic standing.

BTW, scabs are former union that cross. Google it! It's management scum so get it right during your 'intimidation' exercises. Bring on the insults!

One day longer, one paycheck larger!

@pip I didn't realize the union had a super sleuth squad! Good job! You deserve a raise! Wait. You need a job before you can earn a raise. Time to sniff out a job...

Good luck!

@op .....This isn't an outside perspective. This is a biased, inflammatory opinion of someone that doesn't see the whole picture.

The climate between local managers and associates has been toxic for many years. union workers have been on edge with drastic changes in the workplace with heavy handed suspensions being dealt from management while local management have been pushed to do more with less while constantly being threatened to be let go by their superiors.

There is plenty of tension on both sides and you can not paint the picture with a broad bush. If your husband is from out of state,he's going to recieve the pent up anger union members are experiencing mainly cause he is an unknown face and when all is said and done, they will never see him again. If he's working in his area, then he's a manager that lacks people skills to have a cordial, respectable relationship with his unionized associates. The local managers and engineers who are working in their area of original employment don't get harassed as much as claimed on here. They don't get a hero's parade but people realize that when the dust settles,we still have to work together.

The same way some picketers yell obscenities out in the field towards people they dont know...managers and ewa's spew hatefull degrading comments here towards posters with a union perspective . People need to have thick skin and just brush the bs away because this isn't personal,it's business. People come from various walks of life and in the end, everyone just wants to go back to work and provide for their families.

Hey, fight for what you think is right. But Union strikers trying to intimidate customers, intimidate people filling in to make a living, and harassing wireless employees are really the scum. I've driven by numerous stores and seen Union strikers with air horns blasting people going in and out of stores, including little old women. Not exaggerating. Make your point and don't go to work but stop acting like rotten spoiled children because it isn't helping anybody to see your side

The OP is from the mid west and VZ Unions are not there, so yes your in a completely controlled VZ World exactly the way they want it. When your husband gets the boot unfairly, and you life has been turned upside down with out any justification what so ever, only Greed. You will then maybe realize what all these people here in the North east are fighting against.

Your husband will not leave Verizon on his terms, I guarantee you that. and it's going to be painful. So what's wrong with sticking together, and not letting all your years of work be thrown away for no reason other than greed. Lowell and the crew are safe and sound on your husbands hard work.

I am a customer, I can't believe Verizon wants its customer to pay top dollar for its products and do a self install. Ridiculous !

OP is another Verizon cool aide drinker. They think Verizon is a good company. They think Verizon values employees.

I am not union or management or EWA. I am here hoping the Union disrupts Verizon's business because they are a terrible, terrible corporation that must suffer the consequences of its actions.

I want VZ to fail.

You are lower the DooDoo from the management EWAs.

I hope you all get canned, and the union loses.

That would teach you right for what you A$$heads have done.

I'm taking it all in stride, too. Union can insult me all day long, but it doesn't change my opinion or the opinions of many others when union members act so garishly toward others.

How about you educate yourself on what they are fighting for. I have no problem with managers filling in. They have no choice. I dislike scabs coming from down south who aren't vetted and look like they have never held a tool in they life. I wonder if the union would of stuck in December how many southerners would have come running to work in the cold like my husband had for 20+ years.

It's amazing how stupid this poster is. We are fighting to keep decent jobs in America. If Verizon wins this fight, other companies will follow suit. As a result, all of these ignorant managers who insist that they will "just go work somewhere else" will be surprised to find out that it's hard to raise a family on $15 an hour with no benefits. Dumbasses.

So you don't like the way your husband has been treated but you come on here and do the exact same thing to others?! You do realize that the strikers have families just like yours, correct? You just wished that they all lose their jobs. Wow.

I bet you don't like it that your husband is away from home either; kind of stinks that employers can treat their workers so poorly, huh? That's the kind of life you want to live? It's amazing to me that in this day and age, people have to fight to be treated fairly at their place of work. That's what unions fight for. Why is that such a terrible thing? And it's also amazing to me that people like yourself, obviously not part of the 1%, like most of us, think that what Verizon is doing is okay. You're right about one thing, though. Respect is earned. I have very little for you, by the way, but I have a tremendous amount for people who stand up for what is right and put their money where their mouth is; unlike people who continue to let others walk all over them.

@HwfJ3e5-szw, you guys are not fighting for job offshoring in the future You just want to keep your your salary and benefit. You guys are not picketing on any companies that does more offshoring.. You don't have to lie to yourself.

If you really think you are fighting for it, please do so in Washington D.C or any companies that really send jobs offshore.

I am on EWA as well. Even though I respect your perspective, I believe the union is the result of social movement from 1960/70 and have had valid reason for existence. Due the guarantee of job security, there is a room for moral hazards which are often found during this EWA. However, that kind of moral hazards are not limited to the union members anyway.

What I am trying to say is that union is not an enemy. There no reason to be mad or aggressive to any union members. I am pretty sure your husband wouldn't care whatever picketter are saying or doing at this point. (yes, there are low class bums in the union). Nobody I know don't get bothered by union any more. In my opinion, union it is just a dinosaur that should've been extinct.
