Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

No paycheck, no healthcare coverage, no hope.

This is as low as I've ever felt, professionally. I cannot see this strike ending anytime soon or in a positive fashion. We need the concessions from the company in order to have jobs that are palatable, and the company obviously doesn't want us or the business we represent.

The union leaders don't have any reason to cave, as they are still getting paid and still have a black eye from 2011. The company doesn't have any reason to cave because they'd rather sell off wireline than provide good service to customers.

It's hard to even verbalize how I feel about doing a job the company doesn't think is important and looking at realistically not getting a paycheck another month at a minimum. In 2011 it felt like they had to bring us back because the company's welfare depended on it. Now it feels like that not only do they not have to bring us back, but they don't want to.

I know I'm not the only one developing an ulcer during this whole ordeal. It's hard to see the light on any aspect of this job right now. Everything just sucks.

tij: it's great you're enjoying your pension. What are you doing posting about this if you're retired?

It's not a sprint. When I am sitting on my boat, retired with pension income rolling in maybe you can take some time off and wash and wax.

pyw, no jerk off, it's not that fios services are dropping off or dying as you Lowell c0ck sucking inbreds like to continue to spew out of your pie holes. The fact is that the "leadership" is running the entire company into the ground. Do you think Go90 or hum are going to be successful? How about the Aol or future purchase of Yahoo, do you think those are going to work out? NO again! As more and more companies race to the build out of fiber networks, the wonderful wireless network as you know it will be all but gone. Everything involving phone calls and mobile data will be wifi, period. As for the best quality for in home or office data transmission or video, it will always be a hard wired connection.

@env:

Talk about "wanting" something vs. needing it. Wanting improvements in pensions (which most of the company doesn't get so it's hardly a "necessity"). Wanting job security? Wanting the company not to close certain call centers even if it's necessary from a business standpoint?

All of the things the union is demanding are wants, not needs. The union is risking the jobs of 39k people over a bunch of 'wants' and 'nice to haves'.

Hold tight. We will get that 4 or 5 year contract.

Idk why the 30 year cap is such a big issue for Verizon. Come on really?

Most people don't work more then 35 years anyway. And I bet a majority of them go out at the 30 year mark. Plus new hires aren't even in the pension plan.

So why the big push? There is less of us now then a few years ago. And NOW they make this a big issue?

As time goes on there will be less people earning pension credits anyway.

This is just an example of a company wanting something , not NEEDING something

You union people are better payed, have better benefits, more job security and do less to earn it then anyone else in the company but that's not enough for you . You seem to need that satisfaction of harming the company that has provided for you and causing pain and inconvenience to those who have to do the work you walked away from .

Also in case you haven't noticed no one outside of a small area north east even knows you are on strike. The country is not on your side and every day that you stay out the likelihood of you ever being able to come back lessens.

@orz .... that is old school thinking and why the Union has lost this fight. Verizon does not need the wireline per se. It needs the fiber and supporting equipment. It can draw a line around that equipment and sell the rest. Wireline is only a small part of the Verizon profit portfolio.

The Union membership should really stop living in the past way of viewing this business. It has changed and those that do not change with it will lose.

Agreed...this is palatable contract. It is still better benefits than what most of America has. Technologies have changed and the Union has not changed with it. Business needs are different for not just Verizon but all companies in the communication business.

The days of a 30 year guaranteed job and pension plans are finished with. As soon as the Union comes to this understanding and works with the company to meet the company needs and employee needs the better for both.

Scuba diving lessons and the such are not reasonable needs for us to expect. I really cannot blame the company for its stance.

I think it's time to pull the plug. This isn't going to end well and the longer we hold out is just time wasted.

I look at it as an opportunity to get out from under the thumb of ma bell. It has always been too comfortable to leave. However it does piss me off that it wasn't on my terms. The biggest question is when to pull the plug. It was really hard standing in the dark, cold and wet, this morning.

More than likely you are a worthless VZ toad, but if you're not, maybe you should be out right now earning some cash since you were not intelligent enough to save up for a strike fund. Wash cars, cut grass, caddy, pick up dog sh--, all simple work that equals cash.

This sounds like a shill post, but if you are really that hard up, find another job is my suggestion like many others are prepared to do. If Verizon wants to cut off it's nose to spite it's face, then let them bleed themselves to death with stupid business decisions. You don't have to be a party to that.

I'll gladly take the good and the bad, but remind me what the good is because I don't see it.

The offer by the company is for palatable jobs. The union has such a distorted view of what a good job involves that it will not budge in the least. Since the company can get eager contractors for a fraction of the price you guys demand (and those contractors are doing very well on their side), you don't have any leverage. You've overplayed your weak hand.
