Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

From one VZ union member to another...

What are you "not good enough" members smoking? What do you really think you're going to get? A majority of us don't want to be a part of a "movement"... burger flippers are NOT worth $15 an hour, college should not be free, nor should healthcare.

A company should not have to keep a call center open because it is too far for a few people to drive. Drive or take the EISP and leave.

Moving techs 50 miles, move me and I will have to make the decision if it is worth my time to drive. Looking at what our skill set actually pays, I'll probably make the drive.

The Union leadership knows all this, and that's why they won't allow the members to vote on this offer. It would be ratified with no problem. However if that happened, their time to be a part of a political movement will come to an uneventful halt. However, given the moral, they may be the ones that go down in history for destroying the Verizon union.

Union guy here hired after August 03. i don't see or here any mention on getting guys like myself the job security(I can already be transferred more than 35 miles plus laid off) if I don't get a solid answer as to will this strike get me job security like the rest of my union brothers then quite honestly what's left of this strike is not worth it to me.

Not for nothing, but the guaranteed job security provision is worth the whole kit a kaboodle. Very few places can you rely on leaving when you want to, not when someone else decides. That's freaking unbelievable.

If you make 1500 a week and are out for 2.5 weeks that is $3750.

How much are you losing from the new contract.... what is the break even point?

It makes no sense to strike and loose more money than what you are fighting for in the contract.

Hope to see you all back on Sunday or at least some line crossers.

'So it sounds like pride is what is really pissing off the diehards on this board. That's all fine and good, but if it's a choice between my family and my freaking pride, then sometimes you got to be a man and suck it up.'

how about posting what line you'll be crossing so I can watch as you do so.

That "slop" has allowed me to live a comfortable life, healthy, and most importantly, has allowed this "low expectation having piece of s!/t" to start a thriving small business. Oh wait, I guess that's why I have the view I do, I know what it's like to have to actually go out and make something for myself. Not sit back and demand I have a piece of something that was never mine to begin with.

No one mentions the money Verizon saved NOT paying any raise since to CWA members since last August; they're not going retroactive.

2% x $1500 weekly salary = $30. Raise X 40,000 members = 1.2 MILLION.

Now multiply by 35 weeks (Aug 1, 2015 to Apr 28, 2016) = 42 MILLION DOLLARS

The proposal is out there for all to see. Take the time to read it. Then make a decision as to whether you like it or not. For full disclosure I am a Union member.

"We need to take care of ourselves and families first."

How does allowing corporate America to continually sh1t on workers (Verizon or others) benefit our families in the long term? As far as I'm concerned it's selfish just to worry about what I can be foreced to settle for in this contract with no eye on the future.

I agree with OP. I am not part of some movement to change this country. Most of us union workers are in our 40's and 50's. We are not the one's to change or start a movement. The younger folks are. Unfortunately Verizon has decide not to hire these younger folks and we can't change that. We need to take care of ourselves and families first. I hope we are given an opportunity to read proposal in detail and vote on it.

@pyj

OP here. You do realize that the ones who made the their last best offer to the Union are the ones who write the checks don't you? They have every right to do that, it's their business. We write the checks to the Union and if we want to vote on an offer, we should be allowed to. We are NOT in the business of being political pawns. If it's put to a vote and rejected, so be it. But let us have that choice.

OP, do you have children? Do they go to a public grade school, middle school or high school? Do you pay for that public schooling? No, public schools are paid for as part of a tax. Now that it is 2016 and college is today, what high school was 20 years ago, it's time for public college to be tuition free. As for health care, why is it okay for a CEO making $18 million a year to receive FREE platinum healthcare but it's not okay for our membership to ask that our healthcare payments not increase? Based upon your statement about "free" healthcare, my guess is that you're a VZ toad, because if you in fact were a member you would know that we currently pay for our benefits. Go back to your Basking Ridge cubicle and please start wearing some deodorant. Your body odor is offensive to those riding the bus every day with you.

So their giving the Union leadership a last best offer (part 2) that now includes videos describing their position on each outstanding issue is acceptable ??

No, that's called "take it or leave it", and the majority will be leaving it.

Well articulated. Removing the emotion from this whole thing is exactly what needed to be done and you stated it succinctly.
