Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What are you hearing regarding and end to the strike?

Apparently some people are hearing this Friday, but others are hearing it's expected to go on for a couple of months.

Please no sarcastic responses; In my opinion the longer it goes on the more devastating it is for both the non-union and union people.

jij, the only people who have time to read all those links are people without jobs. The rest of us have other things to do.

It's an old high school debate trick to make up a statement and back it up by referencing so much information that no one can or will take the time to read it. You're not fooling anyone; if you have something specific that backs up your claims (and I don't think you do) then post it. Referencing 10 different URLs means you've got nothing.

Seriously I wish there is strike every 5 years so that I can plan to spend extra money. I hear union people also make up big time with OT once you come back?...it seems win-win...in a way. LOL. Good luck to you all.

"It defeats the purpose of even having a strike if we all go into bankruptcy because of it."

Not for nothing, but if a couple of months of being on strike pushes anyone into bankruptcy they must have been living above their means to begin with.

Now, if you're talking about 18 months like Lady Thatcher vs. the coal miners...yeah. In today's day and age very few working people would be able to keep their head above the water, if any.

My point being, the strike began two weeks from tomorrow. It's still in diapers so to speak. How would you have handled getting QAR'd and suspended for 30 days which is what has happened to so many while the people were still working?

Many locals have requested these illegal investigations gone for good and that fact documented in writing before the contract of any kind is signed. Just as FYI. That fact alone may very well turn this strike into a lengthy one, let alone everything else.

Then why did you walk out in the first place? If it's not worth fighting for today then what changed since the 13th? This is early in the game and neither side is blinking. Time to sh-- or get off the pot! Just realize you will probably have to become a manger because scabs are not held with high regard. Maybe not fair but it is very true. Good luck to your plight

I want you to read all of them. See what this company is really about and get yourself educated from a different source than Verizon. Knowledge will set you free. Or are you one of those lazy managers who have all of the knowledge of the world in their head already? You can start with this one if you would like. Gives you an idea of how misinformed you are

zqx -- I hate to break it to you but with our without this strike we won't have jobs eventually. The wireline side of the business is shrinking and having a strike won't change that. Do you think that the entire union workforce will have jobs when there is no revenue just because we had a strike?

Having a strike is irrelevant and doesn't do anything but speed up the process of people losing jobs.

I can appreciate your situation. I too have a family to look after but without this strike you will have no job eventually. Hang in there and good luck. Good luck too all the ewa workers too. What you are doing now is what the company wants to do to us except they want to do it to us whenever they feel inclined to. Hopefully you can also see our side of the arguement. This strike is not about more money or better healthcare. This strike is about dignity and well being. This strike is to tell this greedy corporation that we are not just tools to be used in anyway they please. We as a union have a strong voice to support our cause and we are fighting back. If you can't see that then God help you because I know you can't do it by yourself!

@wsw:

What exactly do you want people to read? All you did was post a link that goes to like 8 different links. If you have a point you want to get across then post the actual link. Posting a bunch of minutia makes it look like you don't know what you're talking about.

If you're trying to make a point then make it. Posting a link to 10 other links doesn't prove your point; it only makes it look like you have no proof.

@voq -- some of aren't able to just stash away income so we can be without work for months. Kudos to you if you are that financially well off, but not all of us are. Please don't try to speak for all of us because you don't represent all of us. I work hard and make a good living, but I also have four kids and a wife to support. It's not always possible for those of us who have families to just stash money away.

You and the CWA leaders need to understand that we need to be working. It defeats the purpose of even having a strike if we all go into bankruptcy because of it.

Yep and they will own the pipes that carry it. Just wait till Verizon actually has to pay the wireline side of the company to use it and to build out their wireless network. They have been avoiding paying and stashing construction cost to the wireline side for years. I hope they sell us and then go down in flames

You people who think Google is building out fiber for profit are hilarious. They are not trying to become an ISP -- it's an avenue for their content. Funny how obvious it is that some of you don't get it.

And to those of you who think the majority of VZ's wireline revenue comes from FIOS, you need to go read the financial statements again. Voice is still the major revenue contributor -- by a long shot.

"Google isn't investing in POTs which is the main source of revenue from wireline. "

Nonsense. FiOS, special circuits, and various hi-tech circuits is where the wireline revenue comes from for the most part.

"especially people who might miss a mortage payment or have their credit rating dinged as a result of it."

Their credit will get dinged much worse if the currently proposed contract were signed and they'd get to be moved permanently 160 miles from their current work location within the next two years and had to quit as the result of that...

People knew this was coming. Anyone with a brain has been stashing funds away for the past four years or so. Those who didn't deserve to get their credit dinged and hopefully get smarter by the time the next strike rolls around in a couple of years.

"If you think Google does the same thing as VZ, then I'm sure Google would love to have you as en employee"

Google grabbed several of VZ's low and mid-level managers from the NYC's FiOS/OSP side last year. Very nice packages were given to these people.

Fiber is fiber is fiber. And fiber is the future.

I'm sure 100% of the union people want a paycheck but that's not what this strike is about. Besides anybody who has been through this before knows we will make up the lost money within a month or two because of tha MASSIVE amounts of overtime we will be given. Probably the same kind of paycheck a all of you ewa people are seeing for the first time in their lives. We have the will and we will or ail!

Post ID: @zxx+H6VL7OJ

And that's the point. Our clueless leadership is passing up the money by not building out fios! Charter just bought lighthouse and time warner. They are wired high speed internet and tv services. Why people insist that wired service is doomed in the future is beyond me?! I guess Google and now the second largest high speed internet company are just stupid? No, it's our leadership who is giving up the future in hopes of becoming something that this company is not!

Post ID: @xhe+H6VL7OJ

kxy, maybe you believe that but financially it makes no sense. Maybe you have a huge savings so not collecting a paycheck is fine with you, but the other 99% of the union employees would like to be bringing in a paycheck.

Even if the strike results in a 10% pay increase (which it won't), the payback of missing a month or two worth of income wouldn't happen for at least a couple of years.

The longer the strike goes on, the worse it is for everyone, especially people who might miss a mortage payment or have their credit rating dinged as a result of it.

Google isn't investing in POTs which is the main source of revenue from wireline. They are investing in high speed internet to make sure their content is accessible, but the internet access itself is not where they get their profit.

If you think Google does the same thing as VZ, then I'm sure Google would love to have you as en employee. Make sure when you interview you tell them that you install FIOS and that's the same thing they do and watch the response you get.

"In my opinion the longer it goes on the more devastating it is for both the non-union and union people."

I'd beg to differ.

Unless a reasonable contract is signed, and most of the nonsense that was implemented over the past couple of years goes away for good, everyone will lose but the highest tier of the management.

Unionized folks are having a much needed break and their replacements are making decent money. What's there not to like?

Unless you are a manager who came from the craft side, you can never appreciate the work the union does. Just because you can climb a ladder and use a screwdriver doesn't mean you can do the job. Most have no clue what is truly involved. Try working in a cramped manhole 8 hours a day crouched in a corner trying to pick pairs out out a ball of 6000 wires. You people filling in are fixing the simple troubles and still taking double the time and manpower to do it. Try shooting a real maintenance ticket and actually do the real work and then come talk to me. Please stop claiming you can do my job better than me because I know I and all other tech would run circles around you. Leave the field techs to do their jobs and just be happy that you have your because of, not in spite of us.

People keep talking about how visionary TMobile's CEO is, but he doesn't have to deal with unions. If he were here he would be having to take a stance on costs too, just like VZ's leadership.

It doesn't matter who is CEO, the wireline part of the business is shrinking, and competition from VoIP, wireless, cable, etc is not going to go away just because someone else is CEO. Legere would be just as hated as Lowell by the unions.

Verizon 'failure' is the only way to reign in the ne'er do wells who insisted on forcing this strike on the employee unions and EWA workers.

'Failure' is the only way to reshuffle the deck to get rid of the dead and worm infested wood that is affecting the company

T-Mobile and Google and AT&T are kicking the company's backside every which way. Legere makes Lowell look stupid and unqualified to lead. Lowell has been caught on camera a number of times now saying things that are the exact opposite of what is being said at the negotiating table. So yeah, failure is exactly the only cure for what ails Verizon.

Like a falling down drunk, until the company hits bottom, they can never get better.

All in the name of greed.

Financial numbers will start to tumble soon. Inter-co service metrics are not being met. The guys on strike many times did 2x & 3x the amount of work for a typical 8hr employee. EWA'ers cannot keep that pace. Replacement workers have been arrested in numerous states.

And it's not yet week three.

Enjoy your union vacations.

Enjoy your management overtime checks (if they remember to pay you).

Everyone will report back on May 10th.
