Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

After 3 weeks - this is the non-update we get from the National. What a bunch of crap!

From the CWA district 1 newsletter

If Verizon doesn't start bargaining fairly, and this means now, we're prepared to strike. Bargaining can't just be about the company's needs.

Tell your managers that the company needs to back off concessions on pensions, job security, contracting, Family Leave, and Sickness and Accident Disability. They also must negotiate a fair first contract with Verizon Wireless retail workers and a fair contract for the Verizon Wireless techs.

If Verizon doesn't move at the table, we will be on strike. Get Ready.

"Just wait, one morning we will not be on the job because we are on strike. It will not be pretty." hahahahhahahahhahahahhhahahahhahahhahahhshahahhahahhahahhhahahahhahsha. I call bullshit. How long have we been waiting for our union to call a strike? Do big and bad we are with a strike fund that is so massive. Cwa is in bed with Verizon. They both are screwing us and we just take it because we know the truth. The Union is business and wants our money. They don't want to dip into the strike fund. They know it's easier to talk big and bad and eventually just sign a bullshit deal after some back room deals are made. If you don't think the union is in with the company then your are dumb. How do you think some people are fired 2-3 times but then they are back at work? The union and company make a sweet deal. We need to wake up and finally see we are in this alone. We need to stick together and ask out union for answers. We have been outside doing our share of picketing but no results. Out side the wireless stores customers look at us and keep going. We had an impact before but since we have been all talk these past months we look like the boy who called wolf. I'm guarantee you if big if the union called a strike newbie a few people that don't believe it because we have been bluffing the entire time I'm demanding answers from my union Stewart you should do the same just like they expect us to keep telling management that we demand a fair contract we demand that you need to do their job everybody ask your union steward what's going on in the man's Amancer's on off of this being left going to darken waiting for these dumb emails to come out. But the sad truth is nobody's going to do it because we all know the answers going to be something we have all expected

The WSA was to get us back to work after 2 weeks strike in 2011. It was to give the Company 1 week notice if we were going to strike again. This WSA was ONLY until the contract was signed. There is no WSA in effect now. Our contract expired, NOT extended so we can strike whenever, we don't have to give any notice. Just wait, one morning we will not be on the job because we are on strike. It will not be pretty.

That's exactly what this is....after all this BS....The company AND the Union will hand their members ANYTHING!. And the fed up Members, weary, tired, confused, scared, and just plain sick and tired, with a heavy heart and defeated broken will to continue on to a fair, and just contract, that they truly, truly deserve, Will exclaim.....Where do I sign.....Don't let that happen!

The WSA is an agreement the Union entered into after the last strike. The Company was not going to give the Union the contract they enjoy now without it.

According to the WSA, The company can declare an EPT (Endless Process Termination) this would allow the company to start implementing the terms of there best and final offer. The Union can protest this in writing, but not striking until the Company has been notified at least 30 days prior to the Union's protest. The WSA does grant the Union a one time protest on an EPT. if this is rejected by the company, the company can start to implement to best and final offer immediately. This would include forced transfers and layoffs. It would also include new Benefits and pension grade. There is an article that the the Union can negotiate, but not be granted terms of the new work rules.

Verizon is losing money . They are paying to have people on standby, They paid for legal advice on how to handle these negotiations, and the union issue. They paid to train, they are paying fighting the FIOS Build Out issues. They are paying for overtime to management and to union employees .They are in debt. They have had failing investments. They were forced to layoff thousands of employees sooner to cut their losses. Its possible they are losing money on a possible sale. Sure they say its not an endless game , its just a matter of time before the financials indicate this. The company is feeling it just as much as the union is.

"This is not an endless process" looks like the company knows we are all talk and no action. They basically are calling us out and saying enough is enough. Is the Verizon going to call it quits before we do? If we just did what we should have done before and called a strike, we wouldn't be called out like a bunch of meow meow's

Management and East Associate Team Members:

Yesterday, we presented the unions with comprehensive proposals that bring us meaningfully closer to the end of this process, including revised proposals on retirement benefits, healthcare and workforce flexibility.

We have been bargaining now for over 8 months. As we told the unions this week, this is not an endless process. Although there are still significant differences between the Company and the unions, the Company continues to move this process forward toward closure. We remain committed to a resolution that addresses the needs of this ever-changing business and preserves good jobs with competitive wages and excellent benefits.

Marc Reed

Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer

What does he think he means by "this is not an endless process"?

No one wins in a strike. The pro company person opinions on here sounds childish. Maybe they didn't get much love growing up . Or they always came out on the negative side of every confrontation. One thing I do know he is a worker who is going against his own interests. Not very intelligent.

Techs are being forced 10 hour days all over this company. Now, the reason is simple, we are crazy busy. So if the company wants to attempt to cover this workload without labor, good luck. Maybe they don't care about customers, that could be true, we may find out.

Face it, it's not the only phone company in town. Pack your stuff. The company will win this one. When you get back to work, if you have one, it will be on the company's terms.

This talk of a WSA is all bullshit. Basically you are believing that we have no leverage what so ever. We need "permission" to strike , they can "poll" union memeber after 2 weeks, blah blah blah.

People, if this were true it would be illegal under the NLRA. The days of the company union are over. These posts are from trouble makers looking to stir the pot and get people scared. Just think how ridiculous this sounds. We have to give 60 days notice and then the company has to say it's ok but can extend it another 30. We can't even agree on simple items in the contract but the co and union can come to agreement on a so called "wsa"??? Please.

The only notice under federal law is for nurses, airlines and railroad and then maybe the longshoreman union.

If this WSA exists the union could not strike last August and the Company knew this. Why did the Company have management make flight and hotel reservation to cover strike if they knew the union couldn't walk for 60 days. Do you really think the Company would keep this quiet. Is this getting confused with the return to work agreement when we went last time when they extended the contract, if we were going out again we had to give 7 days notice.

Hahahahahahahaha all you stupid union workers are about to get a taste of reality. No more " everyone gets a raise " days are OVER. Time to work and do a good job at it. So sick and tired of these lazy bums getting paid to just show up. There is no contract. Now looks like no strike. More time for management to hire temp workers and focus on getting you guys out the door. Time to learn how to type up a resume because it's about to get real. Good luck trying to get paid what you do now. O yeah in the real world you have to work 40 hrs to get overtime. And those benefits that will cost you. No more seniority rules, hard work does. Your union nailed your coffin shut. Better retire now before you end up with nothing.

This actually makes sense now. Why did we move to strike to fast last time? Now all we do is keep taking tough but nothing happens. Where can we get more info about this? I mean if this is true we are so screwed. Thanks CWA your the best!

The Union was told by the Company that if they strike, the Company would move to remove the Union from it's wireline associates by essentially making all associates fall under the management title. They can do this under the WSA. This will effectively end the Unions in Verizon. The WSA was a horrendous agreement but the Union did get back plenty of Union dues. very short sighted.

Wow we are totally screwed. Telling you now that we are not on strike because there is no strike fund. Why the hell are we working all this overtime? We slave away 2-3hrs extra a day with no contract. All we hear is " ready to strike" all I see is more and more of us sick of the bull$hit. Don't go on vacation. Take your stuff home. When we ask what's going on we get ignored. We pay our dues and don't get anything when we have been told we will get a fair contract. Just sign so we can get on already since we don't have the balls to man up and say enough is enough. Guys time to trade in the red shirts for skirts and pink top because we totally got bent over this time.

Hey 3man you are confused about the union contracts. First there is no clause allowing for arbitration. In the past the company and union have agreed to meet with a Federal government mediator to help close the divide between the two parties but this is non-binding. Second the unions and company did not sign an agreement when the contract expired to place time restraints on the start of a strike. In 2011 there was a signed agreement on the timeline of a strike being called and the star of the strike.

3man, you can end the MADNESS if you post a link to your source stating the WSA . Its an agreement between two parties, the union and the company, and as such must be available to each and every union member. This is not smoke and mirrors. And btw the company is under all obligations to abide by the CBA , hence the term Collective Bargaining Agreement, an agreement bargained for by both parties.

WSA specifically states in the "no obligation clause" That the company is under NO OBLIGATION to honor any of the Unions CBA agreements once the Company calls for a bargaining impasse. That impasse now will not go to an arbitrator as per the agreement. THIS IS MADNESS! ask your Union delegates...There will be no arbitrator. The WSA will be in effect if the Union calls for a strike, and IF the Company lets the Union strike basically. and that has to be in written notice 60 days prior, and the Company can extend that for an additional 90 days

No such thing as a WSA. All agreed upon negotiations must be in the collective bargaining agreement. If it is not in CBA its against NLRB policy and will be considered non- enforceable.

The WSA also has an article that gives the Company absolute power as to when, and how long the Union can strike for. The Union has agreed to that, if they do not return to work within 10 business days (2 weeks) The company can "Poll" striking workers individually to return to work. If workers return to work, they will be paid, and will work under the Company's last and best offer, until of coarse an agreement is reached. The Union will also lose any grievance procedures of the workers that have returned to work without an agreement. This is the stuff we're facing. though decisions ahead.
