CWA 1118 A Strike of Epic Proportion and Duration ?

Union Tape Message

Wednesday, 2/17/16

Brothers and Sisters,

As you are well aware we continue to work without a contract and over the past 9 months your bargaining team has diligently participated in the bargaining process. Their efforts and your mobilization activities have yielded minimal results. The Union has attempted to solidify an agreement that reflects the competitive challenges that Verizon faces, while securing the future of our members. We are all discouraged by Verizon’s unreasonable demands. The simple truth is that Verizon is a highly profitable company because of your efforts and abilities.

We have offered them many solutions not only at the bargaining table, but also within the workplace. Verizon’s bargaining representatives continue to disrespect our members by not truly engaging in practical negotiations. That is why they continue to provide you with misleading bargaining reports and fabricated operational constraints.

Allow over a hundred members to be permanently transferred to new reporting points. In many cases, these members would be permanently transferred to reporting points that are over 75 additional commuting miles.

Allow temporary transfers (including involuntary forced transfers) to assignments in another state of up to 120 days at any time during a calendar year. Meaning that ANYONE, regardless of title, could be transferred for up to 120 days a year to assignments, anywhere, to and from New England, New York, New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic States. Of course, if there is an emergency or another out of state assignment then the 120 day limit would not apply.

Allow the company to declare a surplus condition under the Force Adjustment Plan in a title and organization within an Article 8 Unit Area. Meaning they want to have the ability to declare a surplus by title within our Local (which they have now twice a year) but only offer it to you if you happen to work in the right organization. (Plant)

Allow the company to declare a surplus condition by job title and ITA.

After a meeting with members of your bargaining team we have decided to inform you that a strike is imminent. This decision is not made easily and is based on the failures at the bargaining table. These failures are not a reflection of your bargaining teams efforts, but of Verizon’s lack of appreciation towards their most valuable asset, you. Nothing seems to move Verizon off their retrogressive demands, not our counter proposals, not our mobilization tactics, not even their record profits.

You should brace yourself and your family for a strike of epic proportion and duration. Our recommendations are to avoid major purchases, work as much overtime as you can, and save-save-save. Additionally, a proactive strategy to sustain a strike is your ability to seek alternative employment. As a CWA member you will receive strike pay from the member relief fund and New York State offers unemployment benefits to Union members who participate in a lawful strike.

Your bargaining team is committed to reach an agreement, so committed that talks continue without meaningful progress. However, it would be inappropriate not to give you an honest opinion and a reasonable expectation.

In Unity,

A very similar message is now on CWA Local 1111, including this paragraph, "You should brace yourself and your family for a strike of epic proportion and duration. Our recommendations are to avoid major purchases, make any medical, dental and vision appointments you need now. Stock up on prescriptions. Take your personal items home from work and save your money."

It's titled "Strike Letter" and is dated February 19, 2016.

This Local 1118 letter was posted by an overzealous EVP who unnecessarily enhanced the message to make it sound a lot darker than it was intended or needed to be.

Go read similar letters posted by other locals & note how they are more fact based and not trying to scare the shit out of their members by putting out a message that none of the other locals (at least in NY) seem to be aware of.

I think most of the ppl on here claiming to be union are nothing but trolls. I have not talked to anyone who is really wanting to walk. With little exception, working now is the same as it has been for the past several years (at least 10). I am getting paid, I have all my benefits, I am getting OT? Why walk? So we can be out for who knows how long with nothing? Unfortunately I am old enough to remember the last "real" strike we had, fortunatly for me at that time I was new and young, with no family, and it still sucked going 4 months losing my pay (and even worse having to pay double dues after we got back), and even though I didn't need them at the time, my health benefits too. I now have the family, mortgage, kids that need their medical, etc.. What we have now is much better than not having. What good will walking out for possibly even longer than 4 months do? Back then, it was far more manual labor involved in the day to day, that is not the case you more, so it really hurt the company when we walked out. Also, back then we were 80% of the total employees going out the door! what are we now, 30%? Walking out now (or at any time) would be the dumb move. Keeping it as is until the contract is done is a win win for everyone.

@cvr Verizon didn't get to be in the top 20 on the Forbes list by what you do pal, i guaranteeing that. It got there more by what a technician does with the actual customer, in their home. and the network they built with their hands. Verizon didn't get to the top on what your talking about, did they? So how did they get to the top? you tell me smart guy? If you need to search for a few bad instances, and they are very few, that tells me that your trying to justify your do nothing, worthless, non difference making job that your are the next to go. bye, bye you wont be missed.

I am the one the customer calls when you fall asleep on their floor, I am the one the customer calls when you fall asleep in your truck, I am the one the customer calls when you hang up on them, I am the one your co worker calls when you are out sick but are building a deck in your backyard. You are your own worse enemy. You parade around the rat yet you rat on each other, you put down the company that pays you. You don't own Verizon. You are replaceable.

Wonder how this strike will effect the sale of TX FL and CA to frontier??? Any thoughts anyone?

I also wonder if frontier would try to get there existing workers over there to "cross" picket lines...

Maybe it is time to start stocking up on popcorn to enjoy the show..

Any contractors out there are already working on other projects they aren't going to drop everything to cross a picket line to help Verizon for any amount of money, I am one. These people are our brothers and sisters Verizon is sorely mistaken if they think their going to get any help from my crews.

That is funny, I did consulting work for Verizon a while ago mid 2000's i have to say the outside group seemed to have there stuff together the technicians anyway but the inside group the leadership seemed a bit lost for use of a better word. i did think they were maybe tipping the elbow a pinch much in there off hours. I could be wrong.

uml

I have to agree, not sure about the me,me,me, but I get what you are saying. We built the network that transports all traffic, and traffic = money. I installed equipment in the eighties that still makes money for this company. That money was taken from landline and built the wireless network, now if this company want's out, then just sell it. Like most who collect a paycheck here we just feel a bit disrespected.

@buq I have news for you, You can't do my job, and for those, you say that are excited to try and do my job...here's my tool belt. The Verizon company you work for has a plant outside with Central offices, That plant is above ground and Under ground, and it was built by ME. All those poles with those cables and manholes were built by ME. Every dollar that comes into Verizon, comes through the plant that was built by ME. All the customers that Verizon has is on this plant that was built by ME. I am the only one in this entire company that see's the customer. as i maintain and install from the Plant that was built by ME. Verizon money doesn't grow on trees, it comes from the plant that was built and maintained by ME Your pay check comes from that customer, that I see, not you. The customer I take care of, not you, The customer i deliver our services comes from ME. not you. Your pay check comes THROUGH ME and what i do with my hands out there. While you sit somewhere warm and dry pretending to look busy. I'm earning your pay check. I would get rid of your job tomorrow and hire another technician, because you are useless. I am the FACE of Verizon, not you. The customer see's ME not you. You should thank me for your pay check I earned it, you get to spend what i earned from MY customers and MY Plant. ITS MY HANDS THAT EARN YOUR MONEY, I AM THE FRONTLINE FACE OF VERIZON THAT PAYS YOUR SALARY. AT THE VERY LEAST, JUST RESPECT ME! HOW DARE YOU!

Non-union here, its despicable the amount of pay execs recieve. sickening that this corporation pays next to nothing in taxes. I'm pro-union, fight for what you want, 401k is the biggest dupe pulled on Americans. I will never get to retire.

I'll get mine during EWA, that overtime was fat during last strike although it was short. And you union people get yours by ensuring a long strike!

Most managers if they were honest would take their tools back in a minute. Misery loves company, when the pension for managers disappeared they wanted the company to discontinue for all. I know because I was a manager that got back just in time.

Hey ynn how about when they get mad at the union for honking horns and cursing and acting rowdy just to get a raise. Then they same the union is nasty a scummy. But when a ceo lays 25000 people just to get a raise it aint nasty or scummy then its called smart business sense. See how that works. The poor will always defend the rich !!!!

How come non union people get real upset when people in the union want more money or better healthcare. Isnt it normal to want more. I mean who would ask for less pay. Question number 2 do these same people get mad at the ceo or cfo for wanting more money. Or is it just the union guy that makes them mad

Its amazing that 20% of the workforce can hold a global corporation hostage to their demands.

This isn't an ilec anymore, its a global corporation of 170k employees. There are 10s of thousands of people being consistently trained for strike duty.

Most of the trainers are former military and former union members themselves.

And while I can't fathom it personally, there is a large swath of folks assigned to strike duty who can't wait to do it.

Yelling on the picket line, following trucks, honking horns and blowing whistles is not intimidating, its more of a fun story you get to tell people when you come home, and show them your 'scab' stardom on YouTube videos, its like a view into the past, because most of us have no clue wheat unions are or that they still exist.

While certain union members state things like, "think of our kids and families" - what do you think happens to strike assigned folks with families? We are pulled away from family dinners, recitals, coaching sports, watching our kids spelling bee's, picking them up after school, helping out our spouses with house duties and day to day norms. All that so you can pout in the corner to get more more more, and expect benefits and pay that 90% of this nations workforce doesn't receive in this day and age.

By the way, most strike assigned personnel are hourly and some salary, but very few are actual managers who lead people. Many of us are just like you, except without a union to 'protect' us. Non union employee walks off the job, they get fired.

The only thing I am at Vz for is a means to support my family. This won't be the last company I work for in my lifetime, I am thankful to have nearly 16 years if my rif comes up soon.

I could care less about unions, corporate goals, credos or shareholders value. Unfortunately we are forced to do this strike duty thing, or we get fired.

Do what you will to survive, but not at the cost of others or you're just as bad a vz execs.

Either way, we are reluctantly ready to attempt to fill your boots, and some are excited about it.

Anyone that would post..."I hope you all get fired" not knowing the lives, and the lives that they touch. There are employees that work very hard to support a family, and a family with a disabled child. that would be devastated by YOUR hopes....You must be a real mean, sad, ugly person. and if you don't think so...you just don't know it. Well now you know it.
