Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Millennials ARE Important

People here who are criticizing the leaderships aims to target millennials are missing the point. By 2025, Millennials will RUN the entire economy as far as purchasing power and labor. This isn't a surprise.

I am super upset with the layoffs, and have several impacted friends. There were better ways to perform this realignment more gradually, but I can't say this isn't necessary. Us Wireless folks should have unionized.

Wow, so much hate for baby boomers. Just to be clear I am not a baby boomer, I'm a gen xer. However, if social security is all that a baby boomer can retire on, I don't blame them for continuing to work so long as their health allows. The longer they work, the larger their SSI will be and most of them need that larger check. Not all baby boomers have or bad jobs that afforded them a retirement pension that they could draw in addition to SSI.

On the flip side, I get tired of hearing baby boomer talk nonsense about millennials as well. Saying things like millennials are trying to push them out of jobs, companies catering to millennials etc...considering millennials are as of now the future of this world, they have their place in society as well. They need jobs just as much as a baby boomer. Trash talking each other doesn't help anything either. It always makes me laugh though to hear baby boomers talking smack about millennials but who raised them? They didn't raise themselves. Just food for thought ;) good day!

Boomers made Millennials. It's a vicious cycle. Boomers made them when they assumed power in university boards, ramping up the costs for an undergrad diploma.

Boomers spearheaded the job and production move initially to Japan, then to Taiwan, now (insert lowest bidder).

Boomers created our current political climate. Look up the corporate rate when Reagan was President. The saving grace is that we dont have the interest rate we had back then.

Boomers created Go90, Hum, and tried to push hard on IoT. Take a look at that last C-Suite regime that VZ had and where are they now?

Boomers took advantage of the tax cut from this current administration and in return wants to lay off 44,000. Surprisingly, this 44,000 didnt include the previous 10,000 let go before the VSP.

So many people want to discredit Millennials, but dont take the blame for a lot of the problems WE ARE ALL facing. There will still be Union slackers that make the hard working Union workers look bad. You will still have entitled younger men and women focus on social presence and agility instead of focusing on the task at hand.

Both of these groups need to come together and propose a new change in the current corporate climate. Both will lose or get taken advantage of if changes aren't made.

Look at it this way, the French are revolting because of a gas tax and changes to their means and ways of living. Think hard and long about that. The reason why that "European" CEO is now in charge is to take advantage of a broken system that we allowed them to manipulate.

For those left at VZ, take back your company.

It is amusing seeing all the generational hate.

Every try to find something positive about anyone else?

Ever realize you are all just getting played by the rich while they take and you fight each other over being different. Good times.

@1uogu, what does “I almost chocked” mean?

They were meant to retire at the age of sixty-five, these parents of ours. They grew up amid a world in which they made a promise, signed an unwritten social contract: you worked until you were sixty-five and then you stepped aside. But not these baby boomers. That was the promise that was promised them—but more important, that was the promise that was promised us. And they have not retired. … They have jobs. They have the jobs. They have all the jobs. For us there is an impossibility of homeownership. How much do we have to pay into a Social Security program that probably won’t exist when we’re old enough to need it? Retire, b--ch.

The boomers are hunkering down with “all of the jobs” and refusing to retire, hogging all sorts of cultural space, and in doing so stunting the economic and emotional growth of the generation below them, some of whom are their literal children.

Baby Boomers are self-centered, self-absorbed, self-confident, and utterly self-centered, even narcissistic.

In the 2016 election, if no one but millennials had voted, Hillary Clinton would have received 504 Electoral College votes to Donald Trump’s 23. Take this logic one step further and it’s unlikely either would have been their party’s candidate. We are now a country divided not merely between blue and red, but green and gray. Millennials are generational superheroes with the mandate and ability to save the world. Abolish the Electoral College, get corporate money out of politics, establish a universal minimum wage.

1urpp, what's an "all so ran"?

A highly-educated Millennial would never have made such an egregious mistake!

I was sitting here in my mom's basement, watching a big screen TV while gaming, perusing Facebook, and contemplating upon how to solve all the world's woes, while reading your post. I know, I know, I'm quite the multi-tasker!

I almost chocked on the Oops! All Berries my mom had prepared for me when I saw your grammatical faux pas.

1uaaf - F--- millennials. The are nothing but a bunch over over degreed under educated morons, like the generation before them. Except. They don't have the hunger and all of them 'received a trophy' whether they deserved it or not. They are the generation that has no common sense and too many pairs of rose colored glasses. In essense this is the bunch that really can f--- up a wet dream.

The impact of the millennials on the market place is as corrupt as they are. They think they work hard, but woring long hours is not the same as achieving closure or getting the deal done. They are cheap and they have no real cajones when challenged. While this is not true for all people born in their era, it is true for the people that have been hired into technology. They are the weakest link. They have never been punched in the face, so we really don't know if they can take a punch.

Go90, like everything associated with the 'new' Verizon is an idiotic idea at this point in the game. Three years ago, it would have been worthwhile. Now it is an all so ran.

This is why I am glad I no longer work at Verizon. It really just was not worth it anymore. Too much politics, too much political correctness, too much 'diversity', not enough focus on delivering a quality product to the customer, and not enough focus on the wireline assets and therefore now that wireless is nothing more than a commodity like dial tone, no major growth prospects.

Those that remain and the millennials are the bag holders because they will be left holding the bag and I will lose no tears for them.

I'm surprised by all the assumptions everyone is making. If we look back at the baby boomers and if their parents had a site like this to talk about their kids many of them would be talking bad about them much like many of you are about millennials. It's true a lot more millenilas are living at home with parents not all of them. That doesn't mean we won't be the biggest purchasing force in a few years. One would be ignorant to not begin marketing towards millenilas. It's because of millenilas that the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and many more are worth billions. Because of that leaderships needs to change and begin focusing on millenilas. Take a look at Go90 for example. As a millennial it's a flop, a video streaming service that lets me clip videos and share them. Sounds like vine in a way but my focus is why would I use Go90 to watch content I am already getting elsewhere? It's redundant. There has to be something unique, Go90 is a mobile only cheesy version of YouTube. Something that would make Go90 successful in a sense that would draw users to it and cause them to consume more data which is what I believe was the intent of Go90. The app would need original content like how Netflix provides original content to its users not available elsewhere. NFL mobile is popular because no other carrier has it that's what Go90 needs. Original content and perhaps the ability for users to upload their own content

and not just edit clips of content provided. Give users the ability to share what they want is what lead to the success of many social media apps: Vine, Snapchat, Instagram... If Verizon would have asked their millennial employees for feedback on Go90 it would be much better than what it currently is. End rant.

Fact is rhat Millennials may have popularized hookup culture and the notion of “friends with benefits,” they are not planning to buy a house or have children, in reallity they are way busy watching reality shows, facebook etc.... social scientists have made a surprising discovery about the sex lives of these young adults — they’re more promiscuous than their parents’ generation, and they are no worried about fending for themselves, that is the kind of employee Verizon wants.

Millennials are often saddled with large college debt because the baby boomers sucked the government dry with generous benefits and low taxes for years. It's the boomers in the administrations of schools that have been driving up tuition even more. These same boomers will spend every penny they have, leaving their millennial children with no inheritance.

Seriously, it,doesn't get more selfish than that.

Where the hell is this trope coming from that millennials live in their parents' basement? As a Millennial working at VZW, I know of none living in their parents' homes unless they are pursuing an advanced degree, and are from a family that can afford to help them, which any Baby Boomer would do for their own children.

I do agree that VZ leadership needs replaced, because Stratton and Lowell do NOT understand millennials. I think Diego is the only one with half a clue, but even he isn't enough to challenge Shammo.

At the end of the day, this is the right move and millennials have enough purchasing power in numbers to more than sustain the economy.

My bigger problem is that we are eliminating people with so much domain knowledge and history of past mistakes.

Millenials don't have purchasing power their parents have, and as a whole the entire generation will be poorer, much poorer, and USA as a whole, they will choose to put food on the table first

Look at how many people are out of the workforce, labor participation all time low, wages stagnant, only the kids of the elite will be able to spend, we need to focus all groups and be the lowest cost and best services

As the organization now stands, yes this is the right move. But the person who is making the right move is also the person that lacked the foresight to avoid this situation in the first place. Some of the departments they laid off had open positions they were still hiring for. So did they just realize it Monday? He created the beauracy he is now saving us from. That's my issue.
