Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How many folks are moving?

This is non-official survey . . . how many people have heard of folks willing to "follow the work" to the new location? I am on a team of about 10 folks and only 1 of us (L3) is going to move.

80% of our affected are no’s. 25% of the overall org are not moving. Those of us in hubs are freaking out. Technical people and people that run the projects are going. We are so sc--wed in ATS. People in the office talk at desks so much they miss alerts and C2W’s are generated. I’m hunting for jobs before this becomes a disaster. Sorry, AI ain’t covering our butts on this.

You sound like a manager or one of (not all) those soft, pudgy DEG or ET techs. The other titles that climb ladders, poles, swing lashers, work in confined spaces have a level of fitness way beyond your typical desk chair cowboy. Not to mention working in extreme weather at times and you can’t be scared of heights or tight places like manholes, belly crawl spaces, attics, deep pits, etc..

Over the last 26 years, I’ve seen quite a few inside employees try an outside position, only to fail. Very few make it, so don’t kid yourself or others trying to make the transition. It is a physical and mental challenge, those that say otherwise haven’t held the titles. There were a few slackers back in the heyday but those days are gone and everyone has to perform at a satisfactory level now, just like management below the c-suite.

"Don’t move for this company "

The company is moving from us . . . when it will be very painful financially to move, and they are not even trying to offset that pain with a move package.

Of course this is really not a job relocation. It is a reduction in force that they do not have to tell the WSJ about.

"...If you are serious, I’d advise you to start working out now unless you are already fit. There is gym and working man fitness, there is a difference. ..."

Um, no offense and I am not commenting on YOUR specific level of fitness...but to portray the average tech in the field as some kind of Iron Man (I know you didn't do that, I am exaggerating for effect) is kind of ridiculous.

You may be different, BUT "most" of those guys are soft, significantly overweight, and eating meatball subs and what not for lunch every day. Let's take it easy on the fitness requirements, eh? LOL

I currently live in the Dallas area and have been wanting to move to a different department and position for a while. It has always been difficult to move to new positions within T. I'm looking forward to seeing more opportunities open up when vacated positions move to Dallas.

when i moved away from Dallas it was 101 degrees at 1:15 AM , humidity was around 100%, sweating like a pig loading the Uhaul in the middl of the night

  • “None of these people are moving. In this housing market there is no chance someone leaves a 3% mortgage on a $300k house to move to Dallas and a $500k house and a 7% mortgage with the same salary. It is just the people with no severance eligibility milking the last 8 months of pay before they are terminated, which is the financially expedient choice if you don’t have the years.”

Correct.
Basically no one is moving.

“ Those who have no skills and realize nobody will hire them are moving. They are stuck with T until T gets rid of them. That is what I noticed so far.”

Exactly this! I opted not to move. One coworker decided to uproot the family and move. This person knew they could not get a job outside AT&T because they are a low performer.

‘‘Jeremy Legg sent out a slow de deck. First wave only 48% accepted a move. 52% declined.”
A 50-50 ratio sounds about right. It was known from the beginning a good number of employees would decide they are in a different season of life and decline the opportunity to move.

If you are serious, I’d advise you to start working out now unless you are already fit. There is gym and working man fitness, there is a difference. It’s a daily grind but rewarding if you like being outdoors. For most positions, no wimps allowed…rain, sleet or snow, you’ve got to go! Summer load usually has forced OT, it’s not scheduled, up to 2 hrs before getting off, they will wait notify you so, be prepared for that. If you are a repairman, digital tech, installer or wire tech, in most cases, you will need to work to completion your work list.

I’d love to pick up an outside position. Less stressful than management & much more money can be made through overtime

2 out of 3 that I know are ‘No’. That is 66% No.
So the question is what percentage they are looking for? Over 50%, 75%? If you are a 3rd level or higher, let us know.

If anyone is interested, they are hiring for some outside bargained positions, may be a pay cut for some but it beats no pay, after severance and unemployment runs out. Just bring your John Wayne attitude, rough tough and don’t take cr-p off of anyone, you will do fine! ;-)

To the people moving, you all realize that you could still be on the next round of layoffs even after you've moved, right?

Personally know of 8 people in Chicago who are not moving, all level 2 and 3. Most of them did not even get the same relocation city as the others.

I’m not seeing many jobs posted outside Dallas. From what I’m hearing all backfills (if any) are going to Dallas unless they can justify it in another location. Notice very few if any are being asked to move to Atlanta.

"When will job requisitions start posting for teams with high rates of non-acceptance?"

Dude, they're not back filling positions. At best they may bring in some contractors to absorb some work, the rest will be pushed to those who stay. People leaving due to RTO is all part of the plan...

  • “I’m hearing over 70% loss from some groups. This was coming from someone that knows the counts. Dont buy the bs of some saying they will move and hoping it changes. That same org had similar stories, but when move day came, those folks got let go when they didn’t move. No severance. Don’t let that happen to you. Tell them no; otherwise you will get terminated with no severance. Only chance any of us have is if we all say no.”

6-9 months of severance is > 2 months of severance.
