Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Performance Discussions in October?

Has anyone recently begun performance discussions with their manager?

It was my understanding that performance discussions for 2023 would not commence until 2024.

I received a message from my manager for a performance discussion.

I think it is weird that a performance discussion would happen in October.

What are your thoughts?

I have been working at Wells Fargo for a few years, but I discovered one thing. If you always follow the instructions from your managers/executives, your career will be screwed. Their instructions are designed to oppress the staff members from gaining control. If you excel too much, your managers will feel threatened and they will use the tools to oppress your power. They will even lie to control their agenda. So the best way to succeed at Wells Fargo is never to take anything at face value, never trust any managers/executives, always think for yourself. Hard work and accomplishments absolutely do not mean anything at Wells Fargo. It's all about politics and favoritism. If you happen to be part of the old boys club, you will be fine, but it means selling your soul. If you are outside of the old boys club, you will need to build your own strategy.

My manager does not know the difference between review/ discussions or any other. The typical dodo bird he is …part of the awesome Wf managerial landscape.

Instead of a tool for feedback reviews are leveraged to stack rack employees w/managerial directives of 10% above the line & 20% below. Someone has to be below the line. Is that really a reflection of performance? When managers have demonstrated favoritism, and the landing is obvious, motivation for improvement nill.

Unless you are privileged executives, the rest of you are just gullible puppets who would believe anything they tell you. LOL

Nothing has changed for the business. All this is is calibrations. Those who think they are getting fake or lower than expected reviews you need to know who you’re up against. But you won’t.

It seems like many employees are having difficulty grasping the concept of how this whole process is now expected to work. It doesn’t matter if you exceed all the bullets in a specific category, you jack up a few STAMP submissions, time sheets, can’t demonstrate X then you’re a meets or more likely inconsistently meets.

ultimately this is absolutely how it should work. You can’t be solid 5’s across the board for everyone all the time with equal bonuses and raises. Why shouldn’t you get better remuneration than me if you’re able to action more items?

Managers have to come up with a few fake negative reviews to reduce headcounts on his/her team. I am not kidding, managers do it a lot.

@1luy

Had not heard of bonus and review dates moving up, but good! Maybe we can move up the goal setting so it’s done in Jan/Feb instead of Mar/Apr or later. Still doesn’t make sense to do an annual review a month after doing mid year, but at least we might have time to accomplish our goals.

We’ve started round 1 of calibration.

nothing has changed this year in terms of review timing. calibration is happening until mid Nov and managers can start having perf review discussions on Jan 10. If your manager is wanting to talk to you now it may be about something you have or have not been doing.

Alot of silly responses and some inaccuracies. This timing is new this year. I'm curious on WHY they accelerated the calendar from prior years. Reviews and, as previously discussed, bonus payout is earlier than ever. So those performance discussions the OP asked about are by design. Nothing to worry about... at least above the other worries.

All that said, I cannot understand why the bank made this change. Accelerating the dates does not save the a company money that is laying off hundreds each week.

My spidey sense thinks your manager had to stack rank you down below a meets and now the manager needs to document your “improvement plan” with you. I hope it’s not the case but that’s what I’d be concerned about.

It also could be nothing, especially if you have a manager who pads their calendar with fluff to avoid real work.

Performance discussion or review? Two words that can have two different meanings. Seems you'll just have to wait and see.

Define discussions.

My team had to write their reviews a couple of weeks ago but that's standard practice and timing for WF.

“Gear up I think they’re about to have a conversation with you around finding a new job.”

Is what I had typed up just to mess with you but then I realized there’s another human being on the other end of the post reading it that I don’t want to terrify.

You’ll be fine , sounds pretty standard to me. All managers pretty much had reviews do last week and then had calibrations calls with their mgr to make sure their distribution looked ok.
