Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Don't join Oracle Cloud Infrastructure(OCI) before you read this

I strongly discourage anyone from joining OCI for several critical reasons:

  1. Financial and Job Instability: OCI carries a heavy burden of over $600B in unfulfilled Purchase Orders (POs). To attract talent, they offer highly lucrative packages—including stock options with an aggressive 40% first-year vesting schedule—and inflated titles (such as SD, VP, GVP, and SVP). However, it is common for employees to be terminated within one or two quarters of joining just to keep corporate costs low.
  2. Title Inflation: Because executive and senior titles are handed out so freely, the organization is saturated with people holding identical designations, leading to severe internal competition over the same responsibilities.
  3. Lack of Technical Depth: OCI primarily provides the data center infrastructure and physical buildings to host hardware, while external GPU vendors handle the actual core technology. Beyond infrastructure, networking, and power utilities, there is very little engineering depth.
  4. Hiring Bias & Recruiter Churn: Upper management is heavily dominated by ex-AWS personnel. Recruiters be-doverbackward to show extreme favoritism toward candidates coming from AWS, while professionals from Azure or GCP are not given the same priority or respect. Furthermore, due to constant employee turnover, recruiters stay in a perpetual cycle of hiring and firing just to justify their own roles and save their jobs.
  5. Short-Sighted Leadership: There is no strategic roadmap beyond one or two quarters. Executive leadership is entirely reactive and focused solely on immediate execution.
  6. Toxic Management Culture: Out of fear of ongoing layoffs, managers at all levels actively hoard and diversify projects simply to justify their own roles, creating a chaotic work environment.
  7. Unprofessional Environment: Employee treatment is remarkably poor. Inappropriate and restricted language is frequently used without consequence in meetings, group chats, and official recorded corporate videos.

Agree on all points except maybe the AWS complaint. I joined OCI from AWS and had exceeds rating this year before being laid off. Agree the AWS culture is bad right now, but it pales in comparison to OCI. They are light years ahead of OCI in innovation - I was a pre-sales SA at OCI and all the salespeople push is that it is cheaper than everyone else. Customers are sold on coming to OCI to replicate what they have on-premise, because there are literally no reliable modernization options on OCI except Kubernetes. When I joined a team of 7 SAs last year (none of whom were from AWS) not a single one had built even a demo on OCI or even opened the console. In fact, one master principal I worked with said he had been there 4 years and never touched it. This would never fly in AWS - you actually have to build a present demos internally before even going in the field. So, dig on them all you want but the issues I saw in OCI was the ridiculous infighting between organizations and accounts having 10 different Oracle reps. Most of this I saw was from seasoned Oracle people who have no idea what cloud is or how to sell it. Don't get me wrong - not praising AWS - it's very toxic leadership right now but Oracle deserves a league of its own.

We noticed that years ago when OCI would not hire internally, while bringing in their ex-coworkers with titles two or three levels higher. The top leadership would invite people to interview and then insult them and the rest of the company. In execution, they were making novice-level mistakes with arrogance.

They eventually got things working, impressively, I must say, just because of the grit of a few good engineers.

@OP Of the 15 managers I had at OCI, two or three were satisfactory and just one good. The rest were from bad to horrible, human and professional skills together.

From my several OCI collegues on various teams I heard personal complains of severe stress, lack of sleep, depression, "feeling not wanting to live every morning".

A manager of mine, who left long ago, told me that he didn't like the place since people yelled at each other at the meetings all the time and so forth. Mandates coming from above to start one or another process were undoable for some core functional areas, which was another strong stress point for many.

Many "architects" are ridiculous in their lack of knowledge and responsibility, all they do is putting together fancy Confluence pages and dropping non-sensical assignments onto IC4s who do most of the practical implementations in the org. Id--tic decisions seen and suffered by intended impementors are everywhere.

People run away from one suborg to another, just to get out of it. Compute, networking, storage: the core suborgs were losing skilled people wanting to escape somewhere, just to get into something similarly horrible if not worse.

And it seems that the negative trend keeps growing across the org year over year.
