Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

@fr they’re 100% targeting remote employees. They made that clear in May and once again this last Wednesday. Outside of the software group, the common denominator for Surgical RIFs was being remote. I get RTO, but the way this company treats loyal, hard-working employees just because of their location - truly despicable. No open positions, complete lack of communication, etc. It’s intentional - they want remote folks to quit. Tenet #5 just washed down the drain. The rest are coming if not already.

My advice to anyone remote - focus on your day to day and the great people you work with. Tune out sh---y upper management and taper your expectations. But don’t quit; ride it out until you get that RIF if you can.

@sa From the HR reps in Boston on Wednesday. Perhaps they out-clevered themselves by not actually calling it sick time.
Also, in Mass, unused vacation time is required to be paid on the day of termination, not on next pay cycle. Let's see if they do that.
And, for people trying decide whether to land the severance payment in 2026 or 2027, it looks like the 1/1 pay date will slide to 12/31 and count in 2026? [And applies to those still employed - 2026 will be rare 27 payment year? If not, then 2027 will be.]

Stressful news all around. Medtronic has developed the RIF process to the highest level….a tragic reality that is rooted in incredibly poor corporate leadership. The grass is greener outside of this circus…. Best wishes to all!

@j9 10000% agree! The company they provide to help you after layoffs was a joke. The only good thing they did was revamp my resume so I did appreciate that and strongly encourage you to get that going as soon as they give you access. Other than that it was a waste especially if you're job is specialized. After I got the boot with the May rif I was able to get a far better job with a company that supports their employees. I look at all of this as a blessing...Hopefully all those in this wave will do the same. Good luck!

@k1 No, MA is not in the list of states that pay sick time (protected PTO).

@hp Impacted people move on. Look for a new job (or not), all the things someone does if they were to quit.
Work search workshops? That’s funny. The HR person tells you resources are available and that you will be contacted and given links to resources. Truth is, you have to harass and follow up to get any of the things they said would be readily provided.
They do have videos you can watch about job searching and getting all set up in LinkedIn. I completed all of it but it didn’t really lead to a job.

@hb They are having a BSI certification audit this week. They will probably wait until the auditors have left site before the Business Updates are rolled out.

I'm just wondering as I've never been impacted with a garden leave period. Do people just stop coming into work and go on with the new life out of Medtronic? use up medical, cash out investment and ask around if any jobs are available? I'm guess work search workshops will be set up. Just curious thats all. Sorry to all impacted.

@g6 it seems this will be a month on month depending on the OU or function. For our function, I am expecting sometime in November

@g6 Might be they could only do so many exit interviews in one day. I’m sure it was at least 100. Mine was scheduled for a half hour, but rushed, like they needed to squeeze in a few more. I wanted to discuss a few things, so I think I got maybe 20 minutes. My guess is there will be another RIF November 1st for people working from home. I’ve been work at home for years before Covid, and I think we were targeted because of it.

Is this round over? Or do people have “business update” meetings on their calendars tomorrow?

I heard it firsthand when a senior director was bragging about how he reel in good people during hiring just by dangling empty promises.

Agree! I know of quite a few remote workers within Surgical Quality that have been impacted today. Curious if it’s remote workers within specific functions as not all seem to be affected (yet).

It’s maddening they are targeting remote people when they approved those people to be remote in the first place, sometimes for medical reasons. It’s not like they are even saying hey you have to switch to in person, they are just letting people go. Garbage

@fb You get your bi-monthly check during the garden leave because you are still a MDT employee. When the two months lapse, your employment officially ends and that is the date your severance check is based off of (unless you find another position within MDT).

Got invited to business update yesterday, RIF’d today. As others said, 60 days garden leave, plus 2 weeks per year of service. I feel bad for those still there and the piles of work that they will inherit. Good luck everyone. Corporate greed is a cancer that’s bleeding us dry.

Do we still continue to collect paychecks during garden leave? Meaning we get both biweekly paychecks and severance?

@f4 They typically only say “your position was impacted as a result X change/decision.” They won’t tell you if its based on RTO

Did MDT use the RTO or Insight rating in the decisions? I'm sure Remote users were impacted as its the new normal in MDT when cherry picking RIF's

I was laid off today in surgical, no warnings, and their decision was final. Severance is 2 weeks per year payable sometime in December.

@ey Standard severance is two weeks pay for every year of service. Will be interested in hearing what is actually offered.

What is the severance package?

@ev they give 60 days “garden leave” aka you’re not working but but they pay you for 60 days so they can avoid the WARN until last minute. Warm will probably be published this week though

Constant layoffs are the new normal at Medtronic. A new group is impacted every month.

To those wondering if it’s just Hugo – NOTHING under RST is safe. Layoffs happened in SW, HW, Management, PMO, Systems; everyone.

Does anyone have any figures? I’m confused how there wasn’t a WARN notice? Original estimation I was told was 100 in Boston and 50 in NoHa, but today was told 80+ in NoHa (no final estimate for Boston)
