Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What Does It Say About the Workplace When On-Campus Psychiatric Care Becomes Necessary?

The new Plano campus will have an on-site mental health and wellness center. What does that say about the “culture” of this company?

Mental health and employee well-being are absolutely important. However, the company continues to highlight this mental health benefits and this new center as a “look what we did” response to the health and well-being survey results. It raises a legitimate question: how much of the mental health and well-being issues employees are experiencing are actually a result of working for T in the first place?

Addressing the symptoms is important, but shouldn’t we also be asking what is contributing to the problem?

If you get “asked” to move and they don’t offer you a relocation package, promotion or pay raise to go with that, then they are hoping you say no. If you move anyways, you will get laid off sometime after you move. As Jeff Foxworthy says, here’s your sign.

@hy Your relocation is tax advantaged to the company and to you. The stipulation in getting a relocation package is that you don't intend to leave within 18 months or you will be expected to reimburse the company for the relocation. This is the part that AT&T does not buy into since they would not be able to recoup the funds when they sever you. They can't or won't guarantee that they will keep you on payroll that long!

Crazy how I'm on mental illness leave, and as i type this, the pressure feels unreal. My anxiety has never been this high before. I'm doing my best to take care of myself and get through this one day at a time. AT&T over the last several years for old timers has been a challenge to say the least. GREED and unrealistic expectations

@ax “ AT&T has ever forced anyone to move.”

Yes, move to Dallas on your dime, no assistance or you’re gone. This practice is illegal in most countries btw. Imagine having to sell your house and move your family across the country or you’re fired. That is exactly what has been happening.

“ At least call center employees get over time pay. If a L2 works 12hrs on Monday, he’s still expected to put in 8hrs in-office each day for the rest of the week. At home work “doesn’t count” so why bother?“

And this is why we should file a misclassification class action against ATT. Exempt classification doesn’t mean min 8 plus extra, it means flex, so if I have to leave for a dr appt or pick my kid up early one day, I can do that without taking pto or sick time, because I’m also expected to work whatever’s necessary whenever necessary. It goes both ways. However, they are treating everyone like hourly workers and expecting us to work tons of extra hours due to all the layoffs and not get extra compensation. Btw, we are not classified as highly compensated employees any longer as those number have shifted.

@eh that’s funny because I’m a salaried employee. Sure, I used to work 12 hours when I had real flexibility in where and when I could work. Since 5X RTO started I haven’t worked a minute over 8 hours and things absolutely do not get done as quickly as they used to. Nobody cares anymore.

@ee salaried employees have never worked on the clock. Projects, presentations, reports, proposals,, presentations etc are routinely worked until the item is completed and that means often 12 hour days or more. No, we're not paid by the hour.
The extra schooling invested to secure advanced degrees and professional certifications means most people have elected a career choice that will allow them to advance and grow. You always want to have more on your plate to offer prospective employers during economic tough times, like now.

@ea
Second level individual contributors thought their engineering, IT, physics, and Masters and PhD degrees earned them some freedoms and respect. For decades that was true. Watching the clock was considered unprofessional. Working a few hours at home in the evening was the norm. RTO monitoring now puts them at the same level as call center employees hired out of high school. No shade to hard working cc employees, we just chose a different path that was supposed to come with privileges. At least call center employees get over time pay. If a L2 works 12hrs on Monday, he’s still expected to put in 8hrs in-office each day for the rest of the week. At home work “doesn’t count” so why bother?

Thankfully Anonymous posts doesn't mean what some of you think it means.

It means leadership continues to read these boards and realizes how unhinged so many employees insisting on RTO have become. Making sure professional resources awere available at HQ is a good thing. Security staff should also be ramped up.

We’re going to micromanage every little thing you do, treat you like little children and do everything in our power to make you hate your job enough so that you will eventually quit. But to make you think we care, we’ll let you talk so some therapist on site to tell you to stay positive.

This company does not care about your mental health. They’re more worried about the liability from someone going postal over the non-stop stress they put their employees through.

@df

Because it's insulting insincerity, shrouded as feel-good "we care about you" BS, and people are throroughly disgusted with the across-the-board gaslighting being done against them from their employers.

These corporations who are buying into AI & H-1Bs/outsourcing up the azz, all at the expense of AMERICAN WORKERS, to the point where Americans in their own country are being shoved aside, treated as if the don't matter and have no future; all while oligarchs, sociopathic "leaders", and subhumanoid "replacements" laugh in American workers' faces, while marginalizing and overtaking the American quality of life with a sub-par and inhumane "brave new world" of inept business practices, FUBAR commerce and backwards/downright evil "cultures" whose goals are to villianize and do-away with "Wh---y/Christians".

People are SICK of it, and PI55ED-OFF about it, and have reached their limit with being patient and tolerating and accommodating their country's demise and destruction. This is not happening just in the USA, but in the UK, all over Europe, and throughout the world. Enough is ENOUGH. It ENDS NOW.

So no, utilizing a smarmy, lame, fake@ss "wellness center" to soothe people's aching hearts, minds, and souls by gaslighting them some more via "talk therapy" and/or plying them with synthetic poisonous tranquilizing dr-gs so they don't resist being run the fu*k over to ruin, is not going to help. We are past that point.

Americans need to TAKE AMERICA BACK!!!

What's truly 'bizarre' is calling well being a code word for psychiatric care. People come to work regularly with anxieties about their kids misbehaving, their neighbor's dogs barking all night, a roof replacement needed, their aging parents, a planned trip that had to be cancelled because a family member needed financial help. These 'anxieties', unaddressed can and do impact well being.
What is so wrong with offering resources to help everyone manage their overall health?
This ain't boot licking or whatever newly derogatory slurs you want to sling. If you don't want to avail yourself of the benefit, then don't, but it sounds like a positive thing.

So much is so wrong with this situation. The solution will not be the courts or congress. It's gonna be wooden planks and sharp elevated blades to cleanse the greed of the billionaire class. No mercy. NONE.

People who collude with them gonna pay too. None of this "go along to get along," BS.

@ax hey genius when a company says pack your bags or GTFO that’s called forcing. You may CHOOSE to forgo your income and benefits in the hope you can find something equivalent locally but that isn’t always a slam dunk.

Companies that force people to move all over the country to keep their jobs, force them to waste time and money commuting for jobs that can be done anywhere (and say the point of the services is to allow people to do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the mandates from employees) and have multiple rounds or layoffs each year that don’t even have the guts to call layoffs, don’t give two sh!ts about mental health.

The people who applaud the cr@p at town halls and give better survey results because of this window dressing are sheep,

It says something about the therapy culture in this country. And the type of people we want to hire.
Weak.

What it says about the company is that it still thinks it competes with FANG for employees and is focused on matching FANG benefits from 20 years ago.

They're probably just trying to CYA legally, should anything drastic happen with employees losing their sh!t while at the workplace.

"Well, we had services for them right here on site, but they chose to wig out at work anyway...We tried to help!"

It's actually worse than any EAP situation, because this is on site, in person, and you can bet that they're closely monitoring who utilizes that service, why, and how often.
Bet they have it rigged with mics and cameras too.

Wonder if them having access to that Personally Identifiable Information about employees crosses any lines of Dr./patient confidentiality or professional propriety?
Just by keeping record of any employee using that "wellness center" could be reason enough for them to make a case against you for "insubordination" or "performance".

This whole concept of relying on your employer to "shrink you head" is very eerily 1984.
So bizarre.
