Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Facing layoffs and 10%

I wonder if leadership understands the position they’ve put employees in now that we are facing the possibility of being laid off AND cut for being in the bottom 10%. Being laid off means it’s not due to your performance - your role just doesn’t exist anymore. Being let go in the bottom 10% “could” mean you’re a good performer on a high performing team. Just think about that. There are good hardworking people who create value for the company facing TWO possible ways of being unemployed. Really cr-ppy.

Just look at the ExxonMobil’s board to see what happens when they lay off the bottom 10% each year for supposed low performance. My friends there are all trying to leave Exxon as their current CEO is offshoring all the jobs to India and using the 10% ranking each year to lay people off without paying severance.

Can someone explain to me how this 10% is different than what we had before reinvent? Where we had below, meets, exceeds and exceptional? I thought bosses had to put a certain number in below expectations?

When will this bottom 10% be reviewed and cuts made? This end of year performance review?

@bs Yes, I can attest to that. This is changing the company culture for the worse. I have seen it at my previous jobs. It becomes a backstabbing, lack of sharing dark place where it is hard to recover. Hunger games

@a1 they would just move the leader to a less competitive role at the most opportune time where the past six months of poor performance gets ignored and the next six months are getting up to speed on the job.

Bottom 10 thing is scary as it has been reported that some managers fabricated deficiencies to justify placing people there. Now they are at risk of being fired based on a false narrative.

We just have to accept there is no more such thing as job security, we provide service, we get paid. It’s a transaction, nothing more. When service no longer needed - contract stops. Discretionary effort has been ki-led (from most) - but that’s to be expected

They understand, they just don’t care about the people. They have a Marie Antoinette attitude, let’s hope they meet the same fate.

Are they going to fire the bottom 10% of the executive team every year? I mean fair is fair. Live by the rules you make.
