Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

To those who will be impacted Monday

Take some time off, don’t immediately jump into a job search. Go spend time with family and friends. Take that trip you talked about but never took. Enjoy the freedom. There are better jobs and companies out there, a layoff from Oracle will be a blessing in disguise.

@a9 Obviously you had some financial independence. It is interesting that you got "Work all your life and then just die" from what was said. Your retirement planning must have been easy since you are just planning on dropping dead when you finish working.

Advice from someone who has been laid off several times.

  1. While you have a job, track who is hiring. Get on the email list from ziprecruiter and Indeed and get a every few days companies that are hiring in your area of expertise.
  2. Those companies that seem interesting, create a resume for each one. Use AI to craft the first draft, humanize it.
  3. If its a mass layoff, you are competing with everyone else. Get your name in first. Get the resumes out there. Then you can relax some.
  4. Job hunting is a part time to full time job. You have no idea of the time it takes from your day. Be focused tho. Unless you have a years buffer in the bank, get on top of it.

@a5 That's bad advice. Work all your life and then just die? No, if Oracle RIF's you, take some time to yourself and enjoy life free of any job commitment. Got RIF'd from Oracle last year, I traveled for a few weeks, did some volunteer work, then got down to job hunting. Market is not as bad as people make it. Ended up in a better job, company position, making more $$. Yea it took 7 months but I wasn't in any rush.

Unless you are financially independent spending money right after you lose your job in a tough job market probably isn't the best advice. People who will lose their job will get plenty of time off while they are looking for their next job. If you find a new job right away push out your start date and take a few weeks off otherwise you will probably regret not getting started right away. You only have about 6 weeks before hiring slows down at year end.
